Senior PHP Developer – Accounting & ERP Systems
Role Overview
This position sits at the centre of backend engineering for an accounting and enterprise resource planning platform, with day-to-day ownership of PHP services, data models, and API connections that keep financial operations running. You will translate business requirements from accounting workflows into reliable software for ledgers, billing, inventory, payroll, and reporting, while working closely with frontend developers, QA specialists, product managers, and business analysts. The work directly affects the accuracy, security, and speed of systems that handle sensitive financial transactions and third-party banking or tax integrations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the architecture and hands-on coding of backend PHP components, applying object-oriented design and clear documentation practices.
- Build, extend, and refine ERP and accounting modules covering general ledger entries, invoicing, inventory movement, payroll, and financial statements.
- Design and maintain RESTful APIs that serve web and mobile clients and connect with external services such as payment gateways, banks, and tax authority platforms.
- Model relational data and tune MySQL or PostgreSQL queries, indexes, and schemas so high-volume financial transactions execute efficiently.
- Embed security and compliance controls, including encryption, access safeguards, auditability, and protection of transaction data.
- Investigate production faults, perform root-cause analysis, debug complex issues, and remove performance bottlenecks across the stack.
- Take part in peer code reviews, share technical knowledge, and help raise engineering standards across the team.
- Collaborate with business analysts and product leads to convert intricate accounting rules into clean, testable software logic; maintain documentation for schemas, endpoints, services, and system architecture.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Advanced proficiency in modern PHP, with senior-level experience typically gained over five or more years of professional backend development.
- Hands-on work with at least one major PHP framework, such as Laravel, CodeIgniter, Symfony, or a comparable MVC framework.
- Deep knowledge of relational database design, schema management, and query optimisation in MySQL or PostgreSQL.
- Proven ability to build and consume RESTful APIs, and to manage code collaboratively with Git.
- A degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology, or a related discipline is beneficial, though equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
- Exposure to ERP, double-entry accounting software, invoicing engines, or fintech platforms is strongly preferred.
- Working understanding of accounting concepts such as ledgers, financial statements, payroll, and taxation.
- Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for cross-team frontend collaboration.
- Advantageous: cloud deployment on AWS or GCP, CI/CD pipelines, and financial data protection regulations.
What We Offer / Why Join
- Gross monthly remuneration of KES 100,000 to KES 120,000.
- Full-time, on-site role based in Nairobi, Kenya.
- Direct influence over core accounting, invoicing, reporting, and ERP modules used for mission-critical business operations.
- Partnership with frontend engineers, QA, product managers, and business analysts in a focused financial software environment.
