In November 2012 (at Africa Com), WIOCC won the Best Pan-African Initiative Award for building an unparalleled, diversity-rich, high-capacity African network which seamlessly links more than 50,000km of terrestrial fibre and in excess of 40,000km of submarine cable - with landings all around the continent. WIOCC’s unrivalled network gives carriers access to affordable, reliable, high-speed connectivity to and from over 400 locations across 30 African countries, as well as to 100 cities in 29 countries in Europe and more than 700 cities in 70 countries globally. To address the proliferation of international and terrestrial links, and the challenge this presents to carriers and ISPs looking to improve their own network resilience and performance (by building in additional diversity), WIOCC developed an attractive one-stop-shop, end-to-end managed service solution. Simpler and much more convenient than having to deal direct with multiple operators, WIOCC’s one-stop-shop solution shields customers from much of the complexity associated with delivering reliable high-performance international connections into, out of and within Africa. Job Description

Role Overview

This position builds the tooling that keeps critical enterprise systems — including carrier-facing network interconnects — configured correctly, observable, and quick to recover when something drifts or breaks. Working under the IT Development Manager, you will move between hands-on coding, architecture decisions, and direct collaboration with operations and business stakeholders, turning their requirements into working automation and integration software. The value you create is measurable: fewer manual change steps, faster fault detection, cleaner data, and systems that scale without proportionally scaling headcount.

Key Responsibilities

  • Run requirements-gathering sessions with system users and convert what you learn into architecture diagrams, design documents, and buildable engineering specifications.
  • Write and maintain automation for configuration management, provisioning, health monitoring, and fault remediation across enterprise platforms, with particular attention to network environments and NNI links.
  • Design integrations that let automation platforms exchange data reliably with B/OSS systems, ensuring new components interoperate cleanly with what is already in production.
  • Embed monitoring, analytics, and reporting directly into the solutions you build so performance trends, capacity limits, and emerging faults surface proactively rather than after an outage.
  • Develop reusable scripts, services, and workflows using Python, Ansible, Terraform, and REST-based APIs, and keep them in version control with clear review practices.
  • Take end-to-end ownership of assigned development projects — analysis, architecture, coding, testing, rollout, and ongoing maintenance — while producing the documentation that lets others support your work.
  • Troubleshoot automated processes alongside operations teams, resolve defects, and act as a technical resource for other departments when projects need engineering input.
  • Protect data integrity and business continuity by managing master and transactional data carefully and ensuring system and user data are backed up on a regular, verified schedule.
  • Scan the market for emerging frameworks, tools, and architectural patterns, then recommend and pilot the ones that would genuinely improve how the business operates.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a comparable discipline from a recognized university.
  • At least 3 years working in systems engineering, software engineering, application development, or a similarly technical role.
  • Demonstrated grounding in system design and software architecture — design patterns, microservices, API-first thinking, and architectures that hold up as load grows.
  • Working command of routing and network services concepts, specifically BGP, OSPF, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Practical scripting ability in Python and Bash for building and maintaining automation.
  • Comfort with structured data formats and models including YANG, YAML, and JSON, plus hands-on use of REST APIs and Git-based version control.
  • Clear understanding of SDLC, systems engineering, IT performance management, IT operations, operational and security monitoring, and how KPIs are used to steer technical work.
  • Broad familiarity with IT infrastructure layers — applications, servers, networking, and storage — and how they interact.
  • Certifications in software development, solutions or systems architecture, or a cloud platform (AWS, Azure, GCP) are viewed favorably; networking credentials such as CCNA, CCNP, or JNCIA are a further advantage.
  • Strong written and verbal communication for documentation, cross-team collaboration, and reporting to the IT Development Manager.
