Job Description

Role Overview

This field-based engineering role centres on keeping MSAN (Multi-Service Access Node) sites in Nairobi running at peak availability, with a particular focus on the power systems that keep customer services online. You will work hands-on across assigned nodes to perform preventive maintenance, respond to power-related faults within strict timeframes, and support the lifecycle of ISDN and PSTN circuits — from feasibility checks through to disconnection and reconnection for billing purposes. The position sits within the Technology department, reporting to the Senior Engineer for MSAN & Field Reporting, and contributes directly to meeting company uptime and service continuity targets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out scheduled and reactive maintenance on MSAN node power supplies to ensure the network sustains its availability target of 99.65% across Nairobi.
  • Own and resolve assigned power-related faults at MSAN and switch sites within defined SLAs, prioritising restoration to minimise customer downtime.
  • Communicate clearly with internal stakeholders and customers throughout the restoration process, providing timely updates on fault diagnosis, progress, and resolution.
  • Perform feasibility assessments, implementation, disconnection, and reconnection of ISDN and PSTN circuits at MSAN level, ensuring billing-related disconnections are reversed within two hours of payment.
  • Maintain accurate customer setup documentation and keep records aligned with engineering standards, updating details for each completed installation or change.
  • Conduct quarterly routine maintenance on all assigned nodes, documenting power autonomy status and recommending corrective actions for each site.
  • Monitor network-related costs, track individual performance, and collaborate with Finance — including submitting monthly power meter readings by the 20th of each month.
  • Adhere to HSE regulations and company engineering procedures, ensuring every site visit is carried out safely and in line with legal and organisational standards.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree or Higher Diploma in Telecommunications, Engineering, or a closely related technology discipline.
  • A minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in the telecom industry, including at least 1–2 years in a hands-on technical role within a large national network environment.
  • Hands-on proficiency in installing and maintaining power equipment, including rectifiers, batteries, and distribution systems used in telecom access nodes.
  • Working knowledge of SIP protocols and practical experience coordinating with SIP providers for circuit provisioning and troubleshooting.
  • Strong routing and switching skills, with demonstrated ability to configure routers and switches from multiple vendors (e.g. Cisco, Huawei, Juniper) using industry-standard commands and tools.
  • A valid Cisco certification or equivalent IP networking qualification is required; additional vendor certifications are an advantage.
  • A valid Kenyan driving licence, as the role involves frequent travel to field sites across Nairobi.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills — you should be able to prioritise your own workload, work calmly under pressure, and collaborate effectively as part of a technical team.
  • A self-motivated, continuous-improvement mindset, with the ability to identify potential risks, analyse complex situations, and suggest practical solutions.
