Role Overview
This is a field-based commercial role for someone who would rather spend the week in front of customers than behind a desk. You will take ownership of a defined patch in either Nairobi or Mombasa and grow lubricant sales across three product families — automotive, industrial and specialty — by opening new commercial accounts and deepening the distributor, workshop and fleet relationships that keep volume moving. The position sits at the heart of the business because lubricant revenue depends on channel depth and technical credibility, and the person in this seat is the company's front line on both.
Key Responsibilities
- Translate annual, quarterly and monthly volume and revenue targets into a workable territory plan, then execute it through a structured weekly route of customer and prospect visits.
- Win new commercial accounts — industrial plants, transport and fleet operators, busy workshops and other high-consumption buyers — from first contact through to a signed supply arrangement.
- Grow the value of existing accounts by identifying where a customer's current lubricant mix can be moved up to higher-margin or higher-specification grades.
- Identify, screen, appoint and develop wholesalers, regional distributors, stockists and retail outlets, then hold them to agreed coverage, stock and volume commitments.
- Negotiate pricing, trading terms and credit limits with partners, keeping every arrangement inside the company's commercial policy.
- Run local trade promotions, dealer incentive schemes and visibility activities, and deliver technical awareness sessions and hands-on product demonstrations for fleet engineers, plant maintenance teams and mechanics; represent the company at exhibitions and industry conventions.
- Gather and report competitive intelligence from the field — rival pricing, promotional activity and route-to-market tactics — so the Area Sales Manager can adjust strategy quickly.
- Chase outstanding balances with trade customers alongside the Finance team to protect against bad debt, and coordinate with Logistics on order progress, delivery schedules and customer stock levels.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Diploma or bachelor's degree in Sales & Marketing, Business Administration, Commerce, Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Experience: 2–4 years in B2B technical sales, business development or channel management, with a demonstrable record of hitting targets.
- Sector background: Direct experience selling lubricants, petroleum products, automotive spare parts, industrial chemicals or mechanical engineering equipment is a strong advantage.
- Network: Practical, hands-on experience building and managing distributor, dealer and workshop networks in a defined territory.
- Product knowledge: Working understanding of lubricant specifications, viscosity grades, industrial applications and engine oil performance characteristics.
- Sales skills: Confident prospecting, technical presentation, commercial negotiation and account closing ability, backed by sound customer relationship management and route planning discipline.
- Working style: Comfortable with daily travel and on-site client visits within the assigned territory, and able to work largely unsupervised while reporting to the Area Sales Manager.
