Humanitarian Emergency Affairs Intern

Role Overview

This 12-month internship places an early-career data and information management graduate inside the Regional Humanitarian Emergency Affairs team, where you will learn how humanitarian preparedness and response are planned, executed, and documented in real time. Day to day, you will collect, clean, and analyse data from multiple field offices, build and maintain dashboards and maps, and support the production of situation reports, lessons learned, and other knowledge products. Your work will help the team turn raw information into timely, evidence-based decisions that shape disaster risk reduction, anticipatory action, and emergency response across the region.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the design, configuration, and testing of digital data collection tools using platforms such as ArcGIS, Power BI, ODK, and Kobo Toolbox for community risk assessments, early warning monitoring, and preparedness tracking.
• Compile and quality-check humanitarian response data submitted from nine field offices, helping to maintain data integrity standards and improve data flows and procedures.
• Contribute to the creation of information products including situation reports, maps, sector infographics, and interactive dashboards for internal and external audiences.
• Clean, analyse, and interpret primary and secondary data to inform regional planning, anticipatory action triggers, and community-level risk reduction strategies.
• Document humanitarian emergency affairs outputs, including best practices, lessons learned, and real-time learning processes, and maintain organised knowledge management systems on Box, Teams, and SharePoint.
• Keep the humanitarian response register and action-point tracking sheet current, while monitoring data quality through field support and feedback loops.
• Support the logistics and preparation of regional training events, workshops, and meetings, including capturing notes and tracking follow-up actions.
• Collaborate with communications, advocacy, and resource mobilisation colleagues to identify stories, blogs, and evidence-based content that amplify the impact of humanitarian programmes for children.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A degree in data analytics, data science, statistics, information management, or a closely related field, with graduation within the last two years.
• Demonstrated interest in disaster management, humanitarian response, or emergency preparedness, with a strong passion for applying data analytics in these contexts.
• Hands-on familiarity with data handling, visualisation, and survey platforms such as Excel, Power BI, ArcGIS, ODK, Kobo Toolbox, or similar tools.
• Understanding of data quality assurance and control principles, including data cleaning, validation, and documentation.
• Ability to communicate clearly, work collaboratively across teams, and manage multiple tasks under deadlines.
• An interest in and foundational knowledge of the humanitarian sector, including Sphere standards and Core Humanitarian Standards, is an added advantage.
• Alignment with the Christian identity and values of the organisation, including a willingness to participate in devotional and team spiritual activities.
