Role Overview
This position is responsible for maintaining a fair, legally sound, and productive workplace by managing all employee and industrial relations activities. Day-to-day work involves handling grievances, disciplinary cases, union negotiations, and compliance audits to reduce legal exposure and foster a positive work climate. The role directly supports the organisation’s objectives by mitigating industrial risks and ensuring consistent application of policies and labour laws.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the full cycle of employee grievances, disciplinary hearings, appeals, and workplace disputes—from initial investigation through final resolution.
- Build and sustain constructive relationships with trade unions, employee representatives, and regulatory bodies to promote industrial peace.
- Conduct impartial investigations into complaints and misconduct, compile detailed reports, and represent the organisation at disciplinary hearings, labour office proceedings, mediation, arbitration, and the Employment and Labour Relations Court when required.
- Ensure strict compliance with Kenyan employment legislation, statutory requirements, internal HR policies, and Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), while coordinating labour inspections and audits.
- Regularly review and update the organisation’s HR policies and procedures manual to reflect current labour laws, regulatory changes, CBA provisions, and industry best practices.
- Communicate, interpret, and oversee the implementation of approved HR policies across all departments to guarantee consistent application.
- Identify emerging employee relations risks, legislative shifts, and workplace trends, and recommend proactive measures to strengthen compliance, engagement, and industrial harmony.
- Advise managers and employees on ER matters, labour legislation, disciplinary procedures, policy interpretation, and industrial relations strategies, and deliver training to build capability.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management, Social Sciences, Business Administration, or a related field from a recognised institution.
- Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP-K) qualification is mandatory.
- Active registered member of the Institute of Human Resources Management (IHRM) in good standing.
- At least five years of progressive HR experience, including a minimum of three years specialising in Employee Relations and Industrial Relations.
- In-depth knowledge of current HR practices, Kenyan labour laws, and leading approaches in organisation development, compensation, talent management, and employee relations.
- Strong investigative, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to integrate information from multiple sources.
- Proven negotiation, persuasion, and conflict resolution abilities, coupled with strong business acumen and commercial orientation.
- Excellent relationship management skills for both internal and external stakeholders, including effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated leadership and people management capabilities, with the ability to manage multiple stakeholders and deliver results under pressure.
