Driving School Instructor

Role Overview

As a Driving Instructor based at one of our branches, you will be the person who turns nervous first-timers into confident, law-abiding motorists. Reporting to the Branch Manager, you will combine classroom theory sessions with behind-the-wheel coaching, tailoring each lesson to the learner's pace while holding them to the standards set by the National Transport and Safety Authority. Your work directly shapes road safety in the communities we serve, and it is measured by how many learners pass their tests and go on to drive competently and responsibly.

Key Responsibilities

• Theory instruction: Teach the Highway Code, traffic signs and signals, road etiquette, vehicle controls and defensive driving principles in structured classroom sessions.
• Practical coaching: Accompany learners on the road in branch tuition vehicles, demonstrating manoeuvres and guiding them through progressively more demanding driving conditions until they are test-ready.
• Lesson planning: Prepare and adapt lesson plans and training materials to suit each learner's experience level, learning pace and areas of weakness.
• Progress assessment: Evaluate learner performance continuously, maintain accurate training and attendance records, and advise learners when they are ready to sit their NTSA driving test.
• Vehicle care and readiness: Carry out pre-lesson safety and roadworthiness checks, keep tuition vehicles clean and presentable, and report mechanical faults or damage promptly.
• Safety and compliance: Enforce seatbelt, speed and traffic-law compliance at all times, follow accident and incident reporting procedures, and keep your instructor accreditation and licence current.
• Learner experience: Welcome prospective and continuing learners, answer enquiries about courses, and maintain the courteous, professional service standards the branch is known for.
• Branch teamwork: Coordinate lesson schedules with the Branch Manager and colleagues to make the best use of instructor time and vehicle availability.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A valid driving licence.
• An NTSA-accredited Instructor Training Certificate and a current Instructor Licence.
• A KCSE certificate.
• At least 2 years' experience in technical training, driver instruction or teaching.
• A Certificate, Diploma or Degree in Technical Training, an automotive-related course, Education or a related field is an added advantage.
• Ability to work with minimum supervision and manage your own daily lesson schedule.
• Strong customer service, interpersonal, presentation and communication skills — you must explain technical driving concepts clearly and put anxious learners at ease.
• Patience, punctuality and a calm, safety-first approach behind the wheel.
