Driving School Instructor

Role Overview

As a Driving Instructor, you will be the person learners trust to turn nervous first-timers into calm, competent and road-safe drivers. Working from a branch location, you will combine classroom theory sessions with behind-the-wheel coaching, adapting your approach to each learner's pace while keeping instruction aligned to national road safety standards. Your work directly shapes how confidently and responsibly people drive once they pass their test, which makes your judgement, patience and example on the road central to the branch's reputation.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver structured theory lessons covering the Highway Code, traffic signs and signals, right-of-way rules, road etiquette and the responsibilities of a licensed driver.
• Conduct practical on-road training sessions that build skills in vehicle control, gear changing, clutch and brake use, lane discipline, parking, reversing, hill starts and junction handling.
• Coach learners in defensive and hazard-aware driving, including how to read other road users, manage adverse weather and respond calmly to unexpected situations.
• Assess each learner's progress against the test syllabus, run practice evaluations and identify specific areas needing extra repetition before a licensing examination.
• Carry out pre-lesson and post-lesson checks on the training vehicle, keeping it clean, fuelled and roadworthy and reporting mechanical faults or damage promptly.
• Maintain accurate records of attendance, lesson content, hours logged and learner performance, and share progress updates with learners and the branch team.
• Customise teaching style and lesson plans for varied learners, including beginners, anxious drivers and those needing refresher or confidence-building sessions.
• Keep current with changes to traffic laws, licensing requirements and instructor standards, and reinforce a culture of safety and courtesy on every trip.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Valid driving licence.
• NTSA Accredited Instructor Training Certificate together with a valid Instructor Licence.
• KCSE certificate.
• At least 2 years of experience in driver instruction, technical training or teaching.
• A Certificate, Diploma or Degree in technical training, an automotive-related course, education or a similar field is an added advantage.
• Demonstrated ability to work with minimum supervision and manage your own lesson schedule responsibly.
• Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, with the patience and composure to teach learners of differing abilities.
• Confident presentation and communication skills, both in the classroom and while giving in-vehicle instruction.
