Role Overview
This position puts you behind the wheel of a school vehicle, where your primary focus is getting students safely from their homes to campus and back again, as well as to educational outings and sports fixtures. You will be the calm, authoritative presence on board, working alongside a bus assistant to keep trips orderly and punctual. Each day starts with vehicle checks and ends with documentation, all while upholding the school’s strict transport policies and national road regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive students on fixed routes and for special school activities, always following the planned schedule and the school’s door-to-door pickup and drop-off policy.
- Partner with the bus assistant to maintain a respectful, disciplined atmosphere on the bus and confirm that every student is aboard before departure.
- Carry out daily walk-around inspections covering tyres, oil, coolant, and lights, and log any defects or mechanical concerns for the Transport Manager.
- Record trip details such as mileage, timing, and destination in the vehicle movement book before every journey begins.
- Fuel the vehicle according to the designated schedule and keep the interior and exterior clean at all times.
- Report accidents, incidents, delays, route changes, or security concerns to the Transport Manager immediately, and follow the emergency procedure if a crisis occurs.
- Park the vehicle securely on campus and at off-site destinations, and lock up properly after each use.
- Support the wider school by running errands, transporting staff, or taking students to hospital in urgent cases when asked.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma in Auto-Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from a recognised institution.
- Valid PSV licence and a BCE-class driving licence held for at least eight years.
- Strong working knowledge of the highway code plus school bus regulations.
- At least two years’ experience driving school buses or transporting children in a professional capacity.
- Certificate of Good Conduct issued within the last six months, along with reference letters from three previous employers.
- Current first aid certification or solid working knowledge of first aid procedures.
- Proven ability to manage student behaviour while driving, with excellent communication and listening skills.
- A proactive approach to safety, able to spot hazards, correct unsafe conditions, and report issues clearly to supervisors.
