Locum EMT Operators

Role Overview

This position keeps an emergency ambulance service moving — literally and operationally. Working alongside paramedics, you will take the wheel for emergency call-outs and inter-facility patient transfers, while also providing hands-on support during pre-hospital care. Beyond driving, the role carries real ownership of the unit itself: its roadworthiness, its equipment stock, its communications gear, and the paperwork that keeps the operation accountable and ready for the next call.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate the ambulance safely and defensively during emergency responses, routine transfers and non-emergency patient movements, adapting to traffic, weather and road conditions.
• Support the attending paramedic during pre-hospital care — assisting with patient handling, positioning and the practical demands of treatment on scene and en route.
• Carry out scheduled and pre-shift vehicle inspections covering mechanical condition, tyres, fluids, lights, sirens and safety equipment, and flag faults for repair before they become failures.
• Keep the ambulance roadworthy by coordinating and following through on servicing, repairs and cleanliness so the unit is always fit for deployment.
• Track spare parts, consumables and emergency equipment through accurate inventory records, and report shortages or discrepancies promptly.
• Test and verify onboard communication systems so the crew can stay in contact with dispatch and receiving facilities at all times.
• Maintain logbooks, maintenance histories, fuel and mileage records, and expense receipts in line with service procedures.
• Follow infection-control, safety and traffic regulations, and represent the service professionally when interacting with patients, families and bystanders.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Certificate in EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate.
• A current, valid practising licence issued by the Kenya Council of Emergency Medical Technicians (KCEMT).
• A valid Class BCE driving licence.
• At least one (1) year of hands-on experience as an emergency ambulance operator.
• Confident, calm driving under pressure, with strong situational awareness and attention to detail.
• Solid interpersonal and customer service skills for dealing with patients, colleagues and the public, sometimes in distressing circumstances.
• Reliable record-keeping habits and the discipline to complete checks, logs and reports consistently.
