Job Description

Role Overview

This role is a technical training position within a TVETA-registered institution, focused on delivering hands-on vocational instruction to learners pursuing trade-based qualifications. Day to day, the trainer facilitates both theory and practical sessions, develops learning materials that align with the national curriculum, and assesses each trainee’s competencies against industry standards. This role matters because it directly determines how well graduates are prepared for employment, ensuring that classroom learning translates into real, usable trade skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver structured theoretical lessons and practical workshop demonstrations in line with the institution’s approved training curriculum.
  • Develop schemes of work, lesson plans, training aids, and assessment tools tailored to different learning paces and ability levels.
  • Conduct continuous and summative assessments, mark trainee work, and maintain accurate records of progress and final results.
  • Enforce strict shop-floor safety practices, including the correct use of personal protective equipment, tool handling, and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain training machinery, tools, and consumables, reporting faults and proposing replacement or repair needs to management.
  • Supervise trainees during industrial attachments, liaising with host organisations to align practical exposure with curriculum objectives.
  • Provide academic and career guidance to learners, identifying struggling students early and recommending remedial support.
  • Participate in internal quality audits, departmental meetings, and institutional quality assurance reviews to continuously improve training delivery.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Diploma, Higher National Diploma, or Degree in a technical or vocational discipline relevant to the training field.
  • A valid and current TVETA Trainers License – this is a compulsory legal requirement for this position.
  • Demonstrated practical experience in the relevant trade or technical industry, with the ability to operate standard equipment and tools confidently.
  • Prior involvement in teaching, facilitation, or workplace mentoring is strongly preferred.
  • Solid understanding of competency-based education and training (CBET) principles and national assessment frameworks.
  • Strong communication skills in English and, ideally, Kiswahili, with the ability to simplify technical concepts for mixed-ability learners.
  • Computer literacy for maintaining learner records, preparing reports, and using digital teaching aids.
  • Good organisation, record-keeping, and interpersonal skills, with a patient and professional approach to learner management.
