Role Overview

This position combines classroom teaching with hands-on clinical instruction, preparing trainee clinical officers to examine patients, reach sound diagnoses, and carry out safe clinical and surgical procedures. The post holder designs and delivers learning across the Clinical Medicine and Surgery curriculum while supervising students during placements in hospitals and health centres, and assessing both their academic knowledge and their practical competence. The role directly shapes the standard of care that graduates will eventually provide, so the quality of teaching, mentoring, and placement oversight carried out here has consequences well beyond the classroom.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, develop, and deliver instruction across the Clinical Medicine and Surgery curriculum, including lectures, tutorials, demonstrations, and practical training sessions.
• Train students in core clinical skills such as patient examination, diagnostic procedures, clinical decision-making, and relevant surgical techniques.
• Supervise and guide students during practical and clinical training, ensuring they perform procedures safely, correctly, and in line with professional expectations.
• Organise and oversee clinical rotations in hospitals, health centres, and other approved training facilities, liaising with those facilities to set up and monitor student placements.
• Prepare and administer examinations, assignments, and practical assessments, then evaluate students' academic and clinical progress and provide constructive feedback.
• Mentor students on academic, professional, and career matters, offering guidance as they move toward qualification.
• Keep accurate records of attendance, performance, assessment results, and demonstrated clinical competencies.
• Ensure teaching, assessment, and clinical training activities meet applicable regulatory and professional standards, and contribute to research, departmental meetings, and ongoing improvement of teaching and learning practice.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Clinical Medicine from a recognised institution.
• A current, valid practising licence issued by the Clinical Officers Council.
• At least three years of relevant clinical and teaching experience gained at a recognised university, TVET institution, or other tertiary training institution.
• Demonstrated ability to teach and assess clinical skills, including patient examination, diagnostic procedures, clinical reasoning, and basic surgical techniques.
• Strong organisational and interpersonal skills for coordinating placements with healthcare facilities, supervising students in clinical settings, and mentoring them through their training.
