Humanities Editor

Role Overview

This editor takes ownership of humanities titles from the first spark of an idea through to press-ready pages, shaping geography and history manuscripts so they land well with learners working inside a competency-based framework. The day-to-day mix is hands-on: refining drafts, chasing down facts, and keeping authors, reviewers and designers moving on a shared schedule, alongside the more strategic work of spotting gaps in the market and proposing new projects. The role matters because the strength of a publisher's list depends on whether its resources are genuinely accurate, teachable and aligned to what the curriculum expects students to be able to do.

Key Responsibilities

• Seek out and commission promising humanities manuscripts, and put forward proposals for new titles or series that fit the wider publishing plan.
• Line-edit, copy-edit and proofread geography and history manuscripts, lifting each draft to a consistently high editorial standard.
• Confirm that subject matter is factually sound, age-appropriate, engaging and mapped to the relevant CBE learning outcomes.
• Run original research, verify facts and trace sources, resolving queries raised by authors or subject reviewers along the way.
• Brief and coordinate with authors, reviewers, illustrators and designers, keeping every stage of the publishing schedule on track.
• Audit titles for internal consistency and sensible progression, so ideas and skills build logically from chapter to chapter and level to level.
• Maintain quality-assurance checkpoints that catch errors, gaps and inconsistencies before files move into production.
• Contribute to the creation of CBE-aligned learning materials, including activities and support content where the project calls for it.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field, with a solid grounding in Geography and History.
• At least four years in book publishing, preferably within educational publishing, including experience seeing titles through to publication.
• Strong editing and proofreading ability, backed by the research and fact-checking discipline to stand behind every claim.
• A working understanding of the Competency-Based Education curriculum and how its requirements translate into learning resources.
• Proven ability to develop and review content that is accurate, engaging and focused on the learner's needs.
• Meticulous attention to detail, combined with the composure to deliver against demanding deadlines.
• Experience working alongside authors, reviewers, designers and other publishing team members.
• Up-to-date knowledge of trends, standards and best practices in educational publishing.
