Role Overview
This role owns the company's project-selling effort across Kenya — hunting down construction and fit-out opportunities while they are still at design, planning or tender stage, winning the specification, and then staying with the order until it has been supplied, delivered, paid for and signed off. Sitting between developers, consultants and public-sector buyers on one side and internal factory, supply chain, finance and service teams on the other, the holder of this position directly shapes how much of the country's tile and building-material demand the business captures.
It is a commercially accountable, field-heavy job: success is measured in confirmed procurement orders and revenue, not in meetings held.
Key Responsibilities
- Open new project demand: prospect real estate developments, government and institutional builds, hospitality, commercial and other large-scale construction work nationwide, map the decision chain across developers, main contractors, consultants, architects, quantity surveyors and procurement leads, and convert raw intelligence into qualified, winnable opportunities.
- Run projects end to end: take ownership of each assigned project from first approach through specification, quotation, negotiation, order confirmation, supply and production scheduling, site delivery, inspection, payment follow-up, after-sales and final closure — coordinating internally so every commitment made to the client is actually honoured.
- Win the specification: engage design teams, engineers and quantity surveyors early enough to have the product range written into project documentation, recommend suitable tiles, surfaces, sanitaryware and complementary items, and monitor specification changes for extra volume or substitution risk.
- Drive tenders and public-sector work: monitor government and institutional procurement notices, pull together technically compliant submissions, samples, quotations and supporting documents with internal support, and track each bid through to award while respecting procurement law and company policy.
- Keep the pipeline honest: maintain a live project database covering stage, value, location, client, consultant, procurement status, expected completion and revenue potential, use it to build forecasts, and flag early-engagement openings before competitors even see the tender.
- Deliver the numbers: hit monthly, quarterly and annual project sales targets, negotiate within approved authority levels, protect gross margin on every order, raise conversion from lead to quotation to confirmed order, and grow repeat and account-expansion business.
- Resolve problems on site: own customer complaints and execution issues — quality, delays, quantities, specification mismatches — investigate root causes with the relevant departments, resolve them promptly and professionally, keep clear records, and shield the commercial relationship from lasting damage.
- Feed back market intelligence: track competitor activity in Kenya's tile and building-materials space, including major local and imported brands, their project wins, pricing, positioning and distribution moves, and turn that into practical recommendations for sales, marketing and management.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in engineering, architecture, construction management, building technology, business administration, marketing, sales or a closely related discipline; further training in sales, project management or building materials is an added advantage.
- At least five years of proven project or engineering sales experience within the building-materials industry.
- Direct experience selling tiles, ceramics, sanitaryware, surfaces or comparable construction products is strongly preferred.
- A demonstrable record of managing large construction, real estate, government, institutional or commercial projects from opportunity through to order, delivery and payment.
- Evidence of consistently meeting project sales targets and converting pipeline into confirmed procurement orders.
- Confidence dealing with developers, contractors, architects, consultants, quantity surveyors, procurement teams and public-sector stakeholders at decision-making level.
- Solid working knowledge of the Kenyan construction and real estate market; an existing professional network across that ecosystem is a significant advantage.
- Strong commercial instincts — quoting, negotiation, margin awareness, forecasting and pipeline discipline — along with the willingness to travel regularly to project sites and client offices.
