Job Description

Role Overview

As a Tutorial Fellow, you will contribute directly to the university's teaching mission while advancing your own doctoral research. Your typical week involves delivering lectures and practical sessions, developing course materials, and supporting students through academic mentorship, all within a department that values research output and community engagement. This role is designed for early-career academics who are actively pursuing a PhD and want structured teaching experience in a university environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate course units assigned by the Head of Department, using lectures, tutorials, laboratory work, and fieldwork as appropriate to your discipline.
  • Develop and update teaching materials, course outlines, and assessment tools to keep programmes academically rigorous and current.
  • Contribute to curriculum design and programme reviews, including proposing improvements based on student feedback and developments in the field.
  • Conduct original research, publish findings in recognised journals, and prepare grant applications to fund your research agenda.
  • Present work at academic conferences, seminars, and workshops, and seek opportunities for consultancies that connect university expertise with real-world problems.
  • Mentor students on academic progress, research projects, and career pathways, and provide guidance to junior staff where needed.
  • Participate in departmental committees, faculty meetings, and institutional initiatives that shape teaching policy or community engagement activities.
  • Undertake additional administrative or academic duties assigned by the Head of Department in line with university policy.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Current registration for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant discipline, with clear evidence of satisfactory progress toward completion.
  • A Master's degree in the relevant discipline from an accredited, recognised university.
  • A Bachelor's degree in the relevant discipline from an accredited, recognised university.
  • At least three years of relevant post-qualification work experience, ideally in higher education or a research-intensive setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in university-level teaching and research, including the ability to deliver courses and produce scholarly work.
  • Registration with, or eligibility for registration with, the relevant professional body in the discipline, where applicable.
