Job Description

Role Overview

This is a full-time academic appointment in which the successful candidate carries the twin load of teaching and research: preparing and delivering course content across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes while building an independent record of scholarship in their specialisation. The post holder is the department's front line for student learning and supervision, shaping curricula, maintaining credible examination standards, and guiding students from first-year coursework through to thesis completion. The role matters because it directly determines the quality of the department's graduates, the strength of its research output, and the depth of its relationships with industry and the wider community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare teaching materials and deliver lectures, tutorials and practical sessions to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, adjusting content and delivery to the needs of each cohort.
  • Design, set, moderate and mark examinations and continuous assessments for undergraduate and postgraduate units, ensuring consistency and fairness in grading.
  • Supervise student projects, dissertations and theses from proposal stage through to final submission and defence, and oversee other educational projects and activities.
  • Contribute to the design, review and evaluation of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and participate in curriculum planning within the department.
  • Initiate and take part in research projects in the area of specialisation, publish findings, and provide consultancy services to the community and industry.
  • Assess students' industrial attachments and organise academic trips that connect classroom learning to professional practice.
  • Help develop annual faculty plans and serve on departmental ad hoc committees and other bodies involved in the running of the department and faculty.
  • Build and maintain linkages with industry players, attend and present at seminars, workshops and conferences in relevant fields, and deliver professional and community service.
  • Undertake administrative duties and other responsibilities assigned by the Chairman of Department from time to time.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • An earned PhD degree, or its equivalent, from an accredited and recognised university.
  • For special cases and disciplines — Engineering, Medicine, Nursing and Public Health — a Master's degree in the relevant field from an accredited and recognised university, combined with at least three (3) years of teaching experience at university level or experience in research or industry.
  • A minimum of 24 research and publication points, of which at least 16 must come from refereed journal articles; alternatively, one post-secondary school level book or four book chapters in a relevant field, at undergraduate level or above.
  • Registration with the relevant professional body, where applicable.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach, examine and supervise students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Evidence of membership to professional bodies, where applicable, and an up-to-date individual Google Scholar account listing all publications, where applicable.

How to apply: Submit three (3) hard copies and one (1) soft copy of the following: an application letter; a duly filled and signed Job Application Form (available on the University website); academic certificates and testimonials; and an updated Curriculum Vitae detailing academic and professional qualifications, work experience, current salary and publications. Hard copies should be addressed and sent to The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Planning and Finance, Machakos University, P.O. Box 136–90100, Machakos. A single merged PDF containing the complete application should be emailed to [email protected], with a copy to [email protected], to be received no later than 8th October, 2026.
