Job Description

Role Overview

This Tutorial Fellow position is designed for doctoral candidates who want to combine structured university teaching with their own academic development. Day to day, the role involves leading lectures and tutorials, preparing course materials, assessing student work, and contributing to departmental academic life—all while actively progressing toward completion of a PhD. The university relies on Tutorial Fellows to maintain strong teaching coverage and to bring fresh, research-informed perspectives to course delivery and curriculum conversations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach course units assigned by the Head of Department within your specific area of expertise, using a mix of lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, and fieldwork where the discipline requires.
  • Design, refine, and deliver academic programmes and individual course units, including contributing to the development of new offerings that respond to departmental and student needs.
  • Review and update teaching materials, reading lists, and assessment methods to keep content current, rigorous, and aligned with learning outcomes.
  • Work closely with academic colleagues on curriculum development, programme reviews, and broader initiatives to enhance teaching quality.
  • Conduct original research, publish scholarly outputs, and prepare competitive grant applications that align with the university's research priorities.
  • Present research findings at national and international conferences, seminars, and workshops, and disseminate results through appropriate academic platforms.
  • Support students through academic mentoring, career guidance, and professional advice, and help junior staff where needed.
  • Participate actively in departmental, faculty, and university activities, including administrative tasks assigned by the Head of Department or other authorised officers.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Current registration for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or equivalent doctoral degree in the relevant discipline, with clear evidence of satisfactory progress toward completion.
  • A Master's degree in the relevant discipline from an accredited and recognised university.
  • A Bachelor's degree in the relevant discipline from an accredited and recognised university.
  • At least three years of relevant post-qualification work experience, preferably in an academic or research environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in university-level teaching and research, including the ability to deliver courses independently.
  • Registration with, or eligibility for registration with, the relevant professional body where one exists for the discipline.

Why Join

This is an opportunity to become part of a vibrant academic community dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and community engagement. As a Tutorial Fellow, you will gain valuable teaching experience while pursuing your doctorate, with the support of a department that values scholarly contribution and collegiate collaboration.
