Transport Supervisor

Role Overview

This position places you at the heart of daily transport operations within a well-established logistics and supply chain business. You will take charge of coordinating vehicles, drivers, and port clerks, ensuring every journey runs on time, safely, and within budget. Your day-to-day decisions directly affect fleet utilisation, service reliability, and the company’s reputation with its customers.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and manage the daily deployment of vehicles, drivers, and port clerks so that deliveries and collections happen on schedule and without unnecessary downtime.
• Build efficient routing and scheduling plans that keep the fleet moving, minimise empty miles, and optimise turnaround times at loading and unloading points.
• Oversee loading and offloading activity, spotting bottlenecks early and taking action to release vehicles quickly while maintaining safety standards.
• Monitor live vehicle movements, respond to breakdowns, delays, or route disruptions, and redeploy resources as needed to keep service levels stable.
• Carry out regular vehicle checks and ensure every unit is roadworthy, properly maintained, and compliant with operator licencing and traffic regulations.
• Supervise drivers and port clerks, making sure they follow company procedures, traffic laws, and health and safety rules on every shift.
• Track fuel usage, vehicle performance, and operational costs, flagging any unusual variances or inefficiencies to the Transport Manager.
• Investigate accidents, incidents, or customer complaints, document the root cause, and recommend practical corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A diploma or bachelor’s degree in Transport Management, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Management, or a directly related discipline.
• At least three to five years of experience in transport, fleet, or logistics operations, including a minimum of two years spent supervising operational staff.
• Hands-on knowledge of fleet management principles, transport compliance, road safety regulations, and driver working-time requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to plan routes, allocate resources, and solve operational problems quickly in a fast-moving environment.
• Strong leadership skills with the confidence to direct drivers and clerks, provide coaching, and hold people accountable for performance.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, both for internal teams and for dealing directly with customers.
• A meticulous approach to record-keeping, reporting, and documentation, with strong attention to detail.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Outlook, Word) and familiarity with transport management or fleet-tracking systems is an advantage.
