The society was formed mainly to promote thrift among its members by affording them an opportunity for accumulating their savings; and to thereby create a source of funds from which loans can be made to them exclusively for provident and productive purposes, at fair and reasonable rates of interest; thereby enabling them to use and control their money for their mutual benefit. The Sacco’s founder members were: Dennis Wambugu (Chairman), Jane Waweru (Secretary), Simon Kanani, James Wahome Charity Kanyeki and Fred Gitau. Initially, there was no dedicated office for KIMISITU, elected officials operated from their respective employment offices and later moved to city centre in a shared office. Later the office returned to ICRAF Complex when the management of the latter agreed to provide office space at ICRAF House for the then two staff - The Manager and Accounts Clerk. In order to achieve a solid base for growth, Kimisitu opened membership to other international organizations. Among the first organizations to be admitted included IDRC, Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation consecutively in the formative years. The society has enjoyed tremendous success such that as at 31st December 2015 it had over 400 member organizations and over 7,000 individual members. View more View less

Job Description

Role Overview

This position owns the growth agenda for a savings and credit cooperative, blending hands-on business development with campaign delivery and frontline team leadership. On a typical day the job holder is out in the market recruiting member organisations and individual members, working with Relationship Officers and Sales Agents to turn prospects into active accounts, and keeping existing members engaged across both BOSA (back-office savings and credit) and FOSA (front-office transactional) services. The role matters because membership numbers, product uptake and member retention are the cooperative's core commercial drivers, and this is the person accountable for moving them.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hunt for and onboard new member organisations and individual members in assigned sectors and markets, building a steady pipeline of prospects and converting them against agreed membership growth targets.
  • Grow uptake of BOSA and FOSA products by diagnosing member needs, matching them to the right offering, driving cross-sell opportunities and following through on leads and referrals until targets are met.
  • Watch member activity patterns to catch dormancy and attrition early, then design and run retention, reactivation and re-engagement activities, with disciplined follow-up and reporting on dormant accounts.
  • Expand the cooperative's footprint and share of wallet in target sectors, using market intelligence, member feedback and competitor analysis to decide where effort is best spent.
  • Build durable relationships with member organisations, their representatives and other key stakeholders, and identify and support strategic partnerships that widen market access and sharpen the member value proposition.
  • Plan and execute marketing campaigns, member education forums, AGMs and regional activations, and run cooperative events end to end, covering objectives, budgets, timelines and stakeholder requirements, then evaluating attendance, engagement, leads and business results through post-event surveys and reports.
  • Lead the sales floor: coach, supervise and direct Relationship Officers and Sales Agents on prospecting and selling, and track individual and team performance against set targets.
  • Analyse performance across membership, sales, product uptake, retention, campaigns and partnerships, prepare timely management reports, flag shortfalls and recommend corrective action; also keep the brand consistent across all marketing materials and member-facing activity, ensure marketing assets are properly planned and used, guide implementation of membership and marketing policies, and support the Marketing & Business Development Manager with departmental planning and budgeting, plus any other duties assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communication, Business Administration or Management, Commerce (Marketing), Entrepreneurship or an equivalent qualification.
  • At least five (5) years of relevant experience in marketing, business development or sales, including a minimum of three (3) years supervising or leading a team in sales or business development.
  • Membership of a recognised professional body such as MSK or CIM.
  • Experience working in a SACCO, bank or other financial institution.
  • Comfort with standard computer applications and demonstrated hands-on use of CRM and ERP systems.
  • Personal attributes that matter for this role:
    • Confident communication and presentation ability
    • Strategic thinking backed by strong analytical skill
    • Proven leadership and team development capability
    • Negotiation and stakeholder management strength
    • Commercial acumen with a clear results orientation
