Senior Developer

Role Overview

As a senior web development consultant, you will help UNEP keep its corporate website and related digital platforms reliable, secure and ready to evolve. You will resolve demanding technical problems, guide developers through high-impact changes and migrations, and pass on the knowledge and documentation needed for continued platform support.

Key Responsibilities

• Investigate complex issues across the corporate website, Starter Kit and priority migration projects, and recommend practical technical solutions.
• Assess architecture, code, configuration and implementation plans for major or high-risk changes; identify problems and advise developers on remediation.
• Check release and migration readiness, including system dependencies, security, performance, integrations and rollback planning.
• Provide specialist guidance on Drupal architecture and, as needed, reusable components, React and Next.js integrations, APIs, and OpenSearch or related platform features.
• Promote consistent, maintainable implementation approaches across UNEP’s web platforms.
• Assist with urgent production incidents that require senior-level development expertise.
• Guide the designated replacement through the principal systems, repositories, workflows, deployments, architecture and unresolved technical concerns.
• Prepare a practical Drupal training and operations manual, and maintain technical documentation covering the platform’s architecture, code, configuration, integrations, search, deployment, maintenance and troubleshooting.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Master’s degree in computer science, information systems, software engineering or a related discipline. A first-level university degree plus two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted instead.
• At least five years of progressively responsible professional web development experience, including substantial senior-level work with PHP and Drupal.
• Demonstrated technical leadership on complex websites or multi-site digital platforms.
• Strong command of Drupal architecture, themes, modules, configuration and reusable components, with experience in website migrations and enterprise-platform modernization.
• Experience with JavaScript and modern front-end technologies; React and Next.js experience is preferred.
• Experience designing and integrating APIs and working with enterprise search tools such as Elasticsearch or OpenSearch.
• Strong knowledge of Git, code review and CI/CD deployment practices.
• Experience applying security, accessibility, performance and maintainability standards to web platforms.
• Demonstrated ability to review developers’ work, provide senior technical guidance, create documentation and training materials, and transfer technical responsibilities to colleagues or successors.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a multicultural, international setting are desirable.
