Role Overview

Reporting to the Head of Web Platforms, the consultant will build and maintain the Drupal systems behind UNEP’s corporate, campaign, project and other web properties. The work spans shared components, migrations, integrations and search, helping teams deliver secure, accessible and consistent experiences across a multilingual portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess web-development requests, recommend implementation options and identify dependencies, delivery risks and technical constraints.
• Build and support Drupal sites, including core and contributed modules, custom functionality, themes, content models and configuration.
• Create and improve reusable templates and components for UNEP’s corporate website, Starter Kit and other platforms.
• Implement the technical work needed to move child, campaign and project sites onto common templates and platform standards.
• Deliver hybrid or decoupled Drupal features using React, Next.js and related technologies where suitable.
• Build and maintain APIs and integrations that enable content and data exchange with other systems.
• Improve search and content discovery through indexing, query and ranking configuration, relevance tuning, OpenSearch or comparable tools, and semantic or AI-supported capabilities in line with approved standards and safeguards.
• Maintain multilingual website features and translation workflows; apply security updates; review code; test releases; troubleshoot performance, integration and deployment issues; and provide technical guidance to vendors and developers.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Master’s degree or equivalent in computer science, information systems, software engineering or a related discipline. A bachelor’s degree may be accepted with two additional years of qualifying experience.
• At least two years of professional web-development experience, including substantial work with PHP and Drupal.
• Strong knowledge of Drupal architecture and hands-on experience with modules, themes, templates, configuration, custom features and reusable components.
• Experience migrating websites and modernizing enterprise web platforms.
• Proficiency in HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript, with experience in modern frameworks; React and Next.js are preferred.
• Experience with relational databases, RESTful APIs and web-platform integrations.
• Strong experience with Elasticsearch, OpenSearch or a similar enterprise search solution, including indexing, query setup, ranking and relevance optimization.
• Experience building or integrating semantic search, AI-assisted search or other AI-enabled content-discovery features.
• Proficiency with Git, code review and CI/CD workflows, along with experience applying security, accessibility, performance, responsive-design and maintainability standards.
• Ability to diagnose complex development, integration and deployment problems.
• Desirable: experience with complex or multi-site platforms, multilingual websites and CMS translation workflows; ability to document systems and explain technical issues to varied audiences; sound judgment about AI accuracy, security, performance and responsible use; and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in an international, multicultural setting.
