Role Overview
This academic role combines Public Health teaching with postgraduate supervision, research, curriculum development, and departmental service. The postholder will help maintain the quality of teaching and assessment, support students and early-career colleagues, and contribute to research and accreditation work across the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and postgraduate Public Health courses through lectures, tutorials, seminars, and practical or skills-based sessions.
- Contribute to the design, development, review, and implementation of curricula, syllabi, teaching resources, and assessment approaches.
- Set, administer, and moderate examinations, and take part in internal and external assessment moderation.
- Advise and mentor students, including supervising Master’s and PhD candidates through proposal development, thesis preparation, and examination.
- Conduct independent and collaborative research; seek and manage research or health development grants; and share findings through peer-reviewed publications and academic presentations.
- Support quality assurance, accreditation, and audit activities relating to academic programmes, training resources, and practice sites.
- Mentor junior academic staff and contribute to identifying suitable supervisors and examiners for postgraduate work.
- Participate in departmental, school, faculty, and university committees, planning and budgeting, student recruitment and orientation, and engagement with stakeholders and the public.
Requirements & Qualifications
- PhD in Public Health, Health Professions Education, Medical Education, or a related health discipline from a recognised institution.
- At least five years of university teaching experience in Public Health at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- Training in Health Informatics, Health Records, or Health Management.
- Registration with the relevant professional body, where applicable.
- Evidence of postgraduate supervision and experience reviewing postgraduate proposals, theses, or dissertations.
- A record of independent or collaborative research and publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
- Demonstrated experience in curriculum design, development, and review. Experience with quality assurance or accreditation is an advantage.
- Sound understanding of research methods, research ethics, academic integrity, postgraduate policies, examination procedures, and higher education regulatory standards.
- Strong teaching, assessment, feedback, research, and grant-writing skills, with clear written and verbal communication.
- Effective mentoring and stakeholder-engagement abilities, sound analytical judgement, and confidence using ICT, learning platforms, and research management tools.
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently, interpret academic regulations, manage competing deadlines, and foster an inclusive, student-centred learning environment with integrity and professionalism.
