Role Overview
This academic role combines teaching in public health and related disciplines with research, postgraduate supervision, and responsibility for maintaining strong academic standards. The postholder helps shape curricula, supports students and colleagues, and contributes to the department’s planning, quality assurance, and engagement with professional and community stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and postgraduate students through lectures, tutorials, seminars, and practical skills sessions in public health or a relevant specialization.
- Contribute to the design, development, review, and delivery of curricula, syllabi, training materials, and academic guidelines.
- Prepare and administer examinations, provide constructive feedback, and take part in internal and external assessment moderation.
- Advise and mentor students, support their recruitment and orientation, and supervise Master’s and PhD research from proposal development through thesis examination.
- Conduct independent and collaborative research, seek and manage research or health development grants, and share findings through peer-reviewed publications and academic presentations.
- Support departmental quality assurance, accreditation, audits, and the evaluation of training resources and practice sites.
- Mentor junior academic staff and contribute to departmental, school, and university committees, work plans, schedules, and budgets.
- Represent the department at academic events and stakeholder forums, and contribute technical expertise to policy, business plan, and training guideline development.
Requirements & Qualifications
- PhD in Public Health, Health Systems Management, Health Services Management, Health Records and Information Management, Health Informatics, or a related health discipline from a recognized institution.
- Relevant training in health informatics, health records, health management, or health economics.
- At least three years of university teaching experience in public health, health economics, health management, or health informatics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- Evidence of curriculum design, development, and review, as well as postgraduate supervision and independent or collaborative research.
- Scholarly publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
- Experience reviewing postgraduate proposals, theses, or dissertations and participating in academic committees; quality assurance or accreditation experience is an advantage.
- Sound understanding of research methods, research ethics, academic integrity, postgraduate policies, examination procedures, and higher education requirements.
- Registration with the relevant professional body where applicable.
- Strong teaching, assessment, feedback, research, grant-writing, communication, analytical, mentoring, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Good ICT skills, including familiarity with learning and research management platforms, and the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
- Professional integrity, accountability, sound judgment, and the ability to work collaboratively or independently while supporting an inclusive, student-centered learning environment.
