Monitoring and Evaluation Officer

Role Overview

This position centres on building and running the systems that track how effectively a conservation or development project is achieving its intended results. Day to day, you will turn field-level data into clear evidence for project teams, donors, and carbon-credit stakeholders, helping leadership adjust strategies as lessons emerge. Your work directly supports accountability, learning, and the credibility of the project’s performance claims.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and maintain the project’s monitoring, evaluation, reporting, and learning framework, including logical and results frameworks with measurable performance indicators.
• Lead the development and pretesting of data collection tools, then coordinate field teams using digital platforms to gather accurate quantitative and qualitative data.
• Perform regular data quality checks, clean and manage large datasets, and conduct statistical analysis that reveals trends and informs decision-making.
• Prepare timely, well-structured progress reports for internal management and external donors, ensuring every figure aligns with agreed indicator targets and source documentation.
• Support mid-term and end-of-project evaluations by coordinating data access, contributing to evaluation design, and helping translate findings into practical recommendations.
• Monitor carbon project performance by tracking environmental and livelihood indicators, flagging deviations, and suggesting corrective actions to project leadership.
• Build capacity of project staff and partner organisations on M&E methods, data collection protocols, and correct use of recording and reporting tools.
• Contribute to adaptive management by turning monitoring findings into learning briefs, feedback loops, and action points for periodic project reviews.

Requirements & Qualifications

• At least three years of hands-on experience in monitoring and evaluation for donor-funded development or conservation projects.
• A bachelor’s degree in Monitoring & Evaluation, Statistics, Economics, Development Studies, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Project Management, or a related field; a master’s degree or professional M&E certification is an added advantage.
• Demonstrated skill in developing logical frameworks, results frameworks, and performance indicators that connect activities to outcomes and goals.
• Strong command of quantitative and qualitative analysis, including experience managing large datasets with tools such as Excel, SPSS, STATA, R, or similar software.
• Practical experience using digital data collection platforms such as ODK, KoboToolbox, CommCare, or SurveyCTO in field settings.
• Familiarity with environmental conservation, climate change, natural resource management, pastoral livelihoods, or carbon projects is highly desirable.
• Proven ability to support donor reporting requirements and contribute to project evaluations, including drafting reports and presenting findings clearly.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, with the capacity to translate technical information for diverse audiences.
