Accountant

Role Overview

As the senior accountant within a Kenyan construction and finishing materials firm, you will take full ownership of the company’s daily financial operations—from recording transactions and monitoring cash positions to preparing statutory reports. Your work directly supports procurement and sales decisions, ensuring that inventory of tiles, sanitary ware, adhesives, and related finishing products is accurately valued and controlled. Reporting to management, you will provide the financial clarity needed to keep the business profitable, compliant, and ready for growth.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee the complete bookkeeping cycle, ensuring every financial transaction is captured accurately and filed systematically.
• Manage both incoming and outgoing payments, including supplier settlements, customer collections, and credit control follow-ups.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including profit and loss reports, balance sheets, and management accounts.
• Reconcile bank accounts, supplier ledgers, and customer ledgers regularly to identify and resolve discrepancies promptly.
• Track and verify inventory movements for all finishing materials, aligning stock records with physical counts and purchase or sales documentation.
• Process payroll on schedule, including the accurate calculation of statutory deductions and their timely remittance to the relevant authorities.
• File tax returns for VAT, PAYE, NHIF, and NSSF in line with Kenyan regulations, and maintain all supporting records for audit readiness.
• Generate management reports using Sage accounting software, delivering clear cash flow analysis and performance insights to aid budgeting and forecasting.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
• A professional accounting certification such as CPA (K), ACCA, or an equivalent qualification.
• At least 10 years of hands-on accounting experience, ideally within construction companies, hardware distributors, or building materials suppliers.
• Demonstrated proficiency in Sage accounting software, including its reporting and inventory modules.
• Strong knowledge of financial reporting standards and inventory accounting practices specific to physical goods and project-based operations.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and financial modelling.
• Proven analytical and problem-solving ability, with meticulous attention to detail and a high standard of integrity.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across departments, while also working autonomously to meet strict deadlines.
