Role Overview
As the Terminal Manager, you will take full ownership of the daily operations within a busy container freight station in Mombasa, ensuring that containers move smoothly from the Port of Mombasa to the terminal and out to customers without unnecessary delays. Your leadership will directly influence the terminal’s productivity, safety record, and reputation with partners such as KPA, KRA, and shipping lines. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires sharp planning, clear communication, and the ability to keep every moving part of the terminal aligned with strict performance targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive the speed and accuracy of container transfers from the Port of Mombasa to the terminal, consistently meeting defined KPIs for turnaround and delivery.
- Supervise and coordinate both port-side and terminal-based teams, overseeing yard planning, container stacking, and verification activities to maintain smooth workflows.
- Monitor all terminal operations to identify bottlenecks, reduce downtime, and continuously improve overall efficiency.
- Build and maintain productive relationships with key stakeholders including KPA, KRA, KRC, KEBS, shipping lines, and transporters, while ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Champion health, safety, and environmental standards across the terminal, working closely with the HSE Manager to promote a safe working culture and meet high compliance levels.
- Ensure all terminal equipment and infrastructure—such as reach stackers, forklifts, and yard systems—are well-maintained and operationally ready to prevent interruptions.
- Prepare and deliver clear, concise operational reports within set deadlines, keeping management informed of performance, risks, and opportunities.
- Enforce standard operating procedures and statutory regulations consistently across all terminal activities.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A degree in Logistics, Business, Supply Chain Management, or a related discipline.
- At least 10 years of experience in terminal operations within the logistics or shipping industry.
- A minimum of 3 years in a managerial role specifically within a CFS or warehouse environment.
- Proven hands-on experience in container handling, customs clearance processes, and coordination with KPA, KRA, shipping lines, and transport providers.
- Strong working knowledge of cargo documentation, terminal planning, cargo flow, safety regulations, and the operation of equipment such as reach stackers and forklifts.
- Advanced computer proficiency, including strong command of MS Office tools.
- Excellent strategic thinking abilities, with a track record of making sound decisions under pressure.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills in English, complemented by strong interpersonal capabilities.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities with the ability to manage diverse teams effectively and drive results.
