Role Overview
The Human Resources Officer leads day-to-day HR operations at the West Pokot mine site, balancing local recruitment and employee relations with workforce records, payroll checks and contractor compliance. Based on site and reporting to the HR Manager at head office and the Site Manager, this role helps keep employment decisions fair, legally sound and aligned with operational needs while supervising an HR Assistant.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage recruitment against approved staffing requests, including candidate screening, interviews, background checks, onboarding and preparation of employment contracts.
- Apply the local hiring framework and relevant Mining Act requirements, working with the Community Liaison Officer and keeping clear records of recruitment decisions.
- Address staff grievances and conduct disciplinary investigations and hearings in accordance with employment law; seek HR Manager approval for dismissals and other high-risk decisions.
- Advise supervisors on attendance, performance and conduct issues, and coordinate probation reviews, performance assessments and training needs checks.
- Check attendance, overtime, leave and casual worker payment records; reconcile workforce changes and pay-rate updates with headcount before sending payroll inputs to Finance.
- Review casual workforce records for duplicate attendance, unsupported overtime or other signs of inaccurate payments.
- Confirm contractor workers have appropriate engagement documents, site induction, medical clearance and WIBA cover before site access is granted.
- Maintain confidential personnel files, supervise and develop the HR Assistant, and report site workforce indicators and HR cases to head office each week and month.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management or a related field.
- CHRP-K qualification and IHRM membership, with a valid HRMPEB practising certificate.
- At least four years’ experience in generalist HR, including two years in a mining, construction, manufacturing or agribusiness site with a substantial casual workforce.
- At least one year of formal experience supervising or mentoring HR support staff.
- Practical knowledge of the Employment Act, Labour Relations Act, OSHA, WIBA, Data Protection Act 2019 and Mining Act 2016.
- Strong written and spoken English and Kiswahili, with the ability to communicate confidently with employees, site leaders and community committees.
- Demonstrated integrity and impartiality when handling hiring, payroll and employee relations matters; a valid Certificate of Good Conduct is required.
- Willingness to work full-time at the West Pokot mine site on an approved residential roster.
What We Offer / Why Join
This is a full-time, on-site role with a monthly salary range of Ksh 100,000–130,000. The position provides responsibility for core HR operations at a mine site and direct supervision of an HR Assistant.
