Role Overview
This position is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of faecal sludge and wastewater treatment operations at the Sabaki and Watamu facilities, ensuring that all processes run reliably, safely, and within environmental limits. The supervisor coordinates plant staff, monitors treatment performance, and responds to process or equipment issues so that the company consistently meets discharge standards and protects public health. This role is central to maintaining operational continuity across both sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily plant operations at both faecal sludge treatment sites, assigning tasks to operators and ensuring shifts are covered effectively.
- Track treatment performance against NEMA discharge criteria, adjusting processes as needed to maintain effluent quality and regulatory compliance.
- Coordinate sampling and testing schedules, interpret laboratory results, and implement process corrections based on findings.
- Carry out regular inspections of pumps, screens, valves, and other electromechanical equipment, and coordinate preventive maintenance with the maintenance team.
- Manage the safe receipt, storage, and handling of treatment chemicals, enforcing OSHA 2007 standards across all site activities.
- Maintain accurate operational logs, incident reports, and compliance documentation required for internal and external audits.
- Provide on-the-job training and guidance to plant operators and support staff, promoting consistent, safe, and efficient working practices.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Water Engineering, Water Technology, Environmental Engineering, Wastewater Treatment, or a related field, with at least 3 years of relevant work experience; OR a Diploma in one of those fields with at least 5 years of relevant work experience.
- Proven experience in operating and supervising wastewater or faecal sludge treatment processes, including process control and troubleshooting.
- Working knowledge of treatment process controls, effluent quality standards, and regulatory requirements such as NEMA discharge limits.
- Practical skills in diagnosing and resolving electromechanical plant and process faults.
- Strong analytical and decision-making capabilities, especially under pressure.
- Effective communication and leadership skills for directing a small team and coordinating with other departments.
- Willingness to work in demanding plant environments, including outdoors and in varied weather conditions.
