Solar Installation Technician

Role Overview

The Solar Installation Technician Assistant works alongside experienced solar photovoltaic (PV) technicians to keep installation, maintenance, and servicing work moving safely and efficiently. Day to day, this person helps prepare sites, handle components, support wiring and testing, and document what was done so that each system is left clean, functional, and ready for use. The role is essential because well-organised field support reduces rework, protects crew safety, and helps the employer deliver reliable solar projects on schedule.

Key Responsibilities

• Help position, mount, and align solar modules on rooftops or ground-mounted structures while following the lead technician’s layout and fixing instructions.
• Carry, sort, and prepare panels, inverters, batteries, charge controllers, cables, and mounting hardware for each project.
• Support electrical wiring tasks by routing cables, making connections, and keeping conductors neat, protected, and correctly identified.
• Take basic site measurements, note roof or ground conditions, and help assess whether the planned array location is suitable.
• Assist with system start-up checks, performance testing, and fault-finding under the direction of a qualified technician.
• Carry out cleaning, visual inspections, and minor maintenance on panels and related system components, reporting wear or damage.
• Keep tools, personal protective equipment, and the worksite clean, stored correctly, and ready for the next task.
• Record material usage, service activity, and installation notes accurately, and interact with clients politely during site visits.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma or technical qualification in electrical engineering, electrical installation, renewable energy, solar PV technology, or a closely related field.
• At least six months of practical exposure to solar installations, electrical works, or a structured technical apprenticeship is preferred.
• Basic understanding of PV system components, simple electrical circuits, and how solar equipment is operated and maintained.
• Ability to read basic electrical diagrams or schematics is an advantage.
• Willingness to work outdoors, at heights, and in different field locations as projects require.
• Physical fitness and confidence handling tools, ladders, modules, and other installation equipment.
• Good teamwork, communication, and problem-solving habits, with professional conduct around clients and colleagues.
• Solar PV certification such as EPRA T2 or T3 would be a plus.
• Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, punctuality, reliability, and adaptability to changing site conditions.
