Job Description

Role Overview

This is a hands-on field position on a solar PV crew, supporting qualified technicians from the moment a van is loaded in the morning until an array is commissioned and signed off on site. You will spend your days on rooftops and ground-mount frames, positioning panels, running cable, and keeping the installation sequence moving so jobs finish safely and on schedule. The care you bring to a mounting rail, a torqued clamp, or a correctly dressed cable run is what protects the quality of the finished system — and the company's reputation with every client.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work alongside lead technicians to position and fix solar panels, inverters, batteries, charge controllers, and related components according to the installation plan.
  • Stage each job by gathering the required tools, mounting hardware, cables, and consumables, then loading, transporting, and unloading them at the site.
  • Help align and fasten panels onto roof mounts and ground structures, checking rail spacing, clamp positions, and tightness as directed.
  • Assist with DC and AC wiring — routing and dressing cables, supporting terminations, and keeping runs tidy, labelled, and clear of traffic areas and sharp edges.
  • Take measurements and note roof condition, shading, and suitable mounting points during site surveys, feeding observations back to the supervising technician.
  • Take part in system testing, commissioning checks, and fault-finding when an array underperforms or a component behaves unexpectedly.
  • Carry out routine servicing such as panel cleaning, visual inspection of components, and tightening of connections, reporting anything worn, cracked, or corroded.
  • Record materials used, installation steps, and service findings accurately, and flag equipment faults, damaged parts, or unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Keep the worksite, vehicle, and tool inventory clean, organised, and ready for the next project, and deal courteously with clients while work is underway.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma in electrical engineering, electrical installation, renewable energy, solar PV technology, or a comparable technical field from a recognised institution.
  • Roughly six months of prior exposure to solar installation, general electrical work, or a technical apprenticeship — an advantage rather than a hard requirement for a candidate with the right attitude.
  • Basic understanding of how a PV system fits together: panels, inverters, batteries, charge controllers, and the wiring that connects them.
  • Ability to read and interpret simple electrical diagrams is a plus.
  • Physically fit enough to work outdoors in varying weather, at heights on ladders and rooftops, and to handle tools, panels, and equipment throughout the day.
  • Willing to travel to project sites and adapt to shifting field conditions and schedules.
  • Safety-conscious, detail-oriented, and committed to clean, quality workmanship.
  • Clear communicator and reliable team member who collaborates well with technicians, engineers, and clients.
  • Punctual and self-motivated, with the discipline to follow instructions and manage time on site.
  • EPRA T2 or T3 solar PV certification would be an added advantage.
  • Genuine willingness to learn and attend technical training as new panel, inverter, and storage technology reaches the market.
