Role Overview
This position keeps people, supplies and equipment moving safely between offices, field stations and partner sites. The driver is entrusted with a vehicle that represents the organisation on public roads, so the job combines daily route work with disciplined record-keeping, pre-trip inspection and immediate reporting of any fault or incident. Reliability here is not a soft skill — a missed trip or an unroadworthy vehicle stalls scheduled work for everyone downstream.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out pre-trip and post-trip checks on tyres, brakes, lights, fluid levels, battery, wipers and safety equipment, and flag defects for repair before the vehicle goes back on the road.
- Transport authorised staff, visitors and materials along planned routes, adjusting for traffic, weather and road conditions while keeping to agreed departure and arrival times.
- Maintain the vehicle logbook accurately, recording every trip, odometer reading, fuel purchase and service due date in line with organisational procedures.
- Account for fuel issued and mileage covered, and reconcile consumption records when requested by the officer responsible for transport.
- Keep the assigned vehicle clean, fuelled and road-ready, and ensure tools, spare wheel, jack, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher remain on board and serviceable.
- Schedule and present the vehicle for routine servicing, inspection and statutory checks, and follow up on work carried out by garages or mechanics.
- Observe all traffic laws, licensing conditions and internal transport policies, including restrictions on unauthorised passengers, private use and carrying of prohibited goods.
- Report accidents, breakdowns, theft or damage immediately through the correct channels and prepare written statements or incident reports as required.
- Undertake messenger duties, collection and delivery of documents or parcels, and other transport-related assignments delegated by the supervisor.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean grade D (plain) or an equivalent qualification from a recognised institution.
- Occupational Trade Test II for drivers (having passed the Occupational Test II), or an equivalent recognised driver's trade certification.
- Certificate of completion of a Defensive Driving Course from a recognised trainer.
- Valid driving licence covering classes B, C and E, with no current disqualification or suspension.
- Minimum of eight (8) years' active, continuous driving experience, including work with heavy commercial or articulated vehicles.
- Working knowledge of vehicle mechanics sufficient to detect faults early and carry out basic roadside checks and minor repairs.
- Sound understanding of the Highway Code, traffic regulations and safe-driving practice, evidenced by a clean or near-clean driving record.
- Ability to read and write well enough to complete logbooks, fuel records and simple incident reports accurately.
- Physical fitness for long-distance driving, willingness to work outside normal hours when required, and demonstrated honesty and reliability in handling an employer's vehicle and property.
