Role Overview
This role centres on providing safe, dependable transport for staff, visitors, consultants, and other authorised personnel, while also moving materials to field sites, partner offices, and official events. The driver keeps assigned vehicles compliant, well-maintained, and properly documented, and steps in with light administrative and logistical support to keep programmes running smoothly. By upholding road safety, donor rules, and safeguarding standards, the position directly enables the organisation to deliver its mission without disruption or unnecessary risk.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate assigned vehicles in line with national traffic laws and internal transport policies, using defensive driving and high situational awareness to protect everyone on board.
- Carry out daily pre-trip and post-trip checks, keep vehicles clean and roadworthy, and flag any defects or maintenance needs without delay.
- Maintain accurate logbooks covering mileage, fuel use, trip details, and destinations, and submit monthly vehicle reports as required.
- Coordinate servicing, repairs, and fuel monitoring with the transport or administration team to ensure efficiency and accountability.
- Handle administrative errands such as photocopying, filing, scanning, and delivering correspondence, parcels, and documents between offices and partners.
- Assist with field logistics, including moving supplies, programme materials, and internal communications across departments.
- Follow journey management protocols, travel approvals, route planning, and insurance/registration requirements, and report accidents, near misses, or risks immediately.
- Take part in mandatory safety, safeguarding, and driver training, and report any safeguarding or security concerns through the proper channels.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Minimum KCSE D+ or equivalent.
- Licences and certifications: Valid driving licence (Classes B, C & E) or equivalent; valid AA Driving Certificate or comparable defensive driving certification; valid Police Clearance Certificate.
- Experience: At least 4 years of professional driving, preferably with an NGO, donor-funded programme, or corporate setting.
- Road knowledge: Strong familiarity with Kenyan road networks, especially rural and field routes.
- Driving skills: Solid grasp of road safety rules and defensive driving techniques; able to handle both manual and automatic vehicles.
- Documentation: High attention to detail in record keeping and reporting.
- Interpersonal skills: Clear communication and the ability to work well with diverse passengers and colleagues.
- Personal attributes: Integrity, reliability, accountability, and the ability to stay calm under pressure, manage long-distance travel safely, and respond well in emergencies.
