Role Overview
This position sits at the centre of how the organisation speaks to the outside world, turning everyday activities into stories that media, partners and the public can understand and trust. You will plan and deliver public relations activity across traditional and digital channels while guiding a small team through the daily pressure of media queries, content deadlines and stakeholder requests. Reputation is built slowly and lost quickly, and the person in this seat is both the first line of defence when issues surface and the clearest positive voice for the brand.
Key Responsibilities
- Write, edit and distribute press releases, media advisories, official statements and briefing notes, then pitch those stories directly to journalists across print, broadcast and online outlets.
- Cultivate and maintain working relationships with reporters, editors, bloggers and influencers, serving as the main point of contact for incoming media enquiries, including outside normal working hours when a story breaks.
- Plan and run press conferences, media briefings, product or programme launches, exhibitions and community events from invitation lists and logistics through to on-site support and follow-up coverage.
- Produce content for internal and external channels — newsletters, website copy, speeches, social media posts, fact sheets and annual reports — keeping tone, terminology and messaging consistent across all of them.
- Track media coverage and public sentiment, compile regular coverage and analytics reports, and flag emerging issues or reputational risks to management along with a recommended response.
- Support crisis and issues communication by preparing holding statements, question-and-answer documents and escalation protocols before they are needed.
- Supervise and coach junior communications staff or interns, allocating work, reviewing drafts and holding the team to agreed quality standards and deadlines.
- Coordinate with external agencies, designers, photographers and printers, and help monitor communications spend against agreed budgets.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Communication, Public Relations, Media Studies, Journalism or a closely related field.
- Membership of a recognised professional body, such as CIPR, PRSK or an equivalent association.
- At least three years of relevant public relations or communications experience, of which one year must have been spent in a supervisory or team-leading capacity.
- Strong writing and editing ability, with the flexibility to shift register between a formal press statement, a speech, a social media caption and an internal memo.
- Demonstrated media relations skills: confident pitching, a practical understanding of how newsrooms work, and composure when handling difficult or critical enquiries.
- Comfort with digital tools, including social media platforms, content management systems, media monitoring services and basic analytics.
- Solid organisational and project management habits, with the ability to run several deadlines, events and approval chains at the same time.
- Judgement and discretion when handling confidential or sensitive material, and the confidence to advise senior stakeholders on messaging and reputational risk.
