Role Overview
You will operate a portable barcode scanner to locate, pick, and pack grocery orders within a non-public fulfilment centre, working under timed targets to maintain delivery speed. Every shift requires checking produce and packaged goods for expiry dates and quality, then organising items by temperature zone to preserve cold chain integrity. Your accuracy and pace directly affect how quickly orders reach customers and how much waste the store incurs.
Key Responsibilities
- Use a handheld device to read digital order lists, walk assigned picking routes, and retrieve items from correctly labelled shelf locations.
- Examine each product for visible damage, spoilage, or expired dates; remove and flag substandard items through the system before packing.
- Group picked goods into separate bags or boxes for ambient, chilled, frozen, and fragile categories to prevent damage and maintain safe temperatures.
- Alert the inventory team via the device or a supervisor whenever shelf stock does not match system counts, or when products are near their sell-by date.
- Apply an oldest-stock-first rotation policy while restocking shelves and during picking to minimise write-offs.
- Keep aisles, packing benches, and cold rooms tidy and sanitised, following workplace hygiene and food safety rules.
- During quieter intervals, support receiving deliveries, putting stock away, or conducting spot checks on inventory accuracy.
- Report any broken scanners, label printers, or refrigeration units immediately so delays in order processing are avoided.
Requirements & Qualifications
- KCSE certificate or equivalent school-leaving qualification.
- No prior warehouse or picking experience required, though familiarity with FMCG or quick-commerce environments is an advantage.
- Ability to read basic order information and navigate a touchscreen or PDA-style scanner app without assistance.
- Strong eye for detail, especially when checking fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy, and packaged goods for ripeness and expiry.
- Physically able to stand, walk, and regularly lift loads up to 15 kg, including work inside chilled and frozen temperature zones.
- Comfortable using a smartphone, tablet, or dedicated scanner for daily picking and inventory tasks.
- Capacity to collaborate with a small team under pressure, especially during lunch and evening rushes.
- Trustworthiness and punctuality, as inventory accuracy and store profitability depend on careful handling and reporting.
- Willingness to work a rotating schedule covering early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
