Job Description

Role Overview

This is a management-level accounting position with a Nairobi-based company that imports and distributes specialty fertilizers and crop nutrition products to agricultural clients. In this role, you will take ownership of the company's daily financial operations, overseeing the accounts receivable cycle, maintaining an accurate general ledger, and ensuring that statutory obligations are met without fail. Beyond routine record-keeping, you will be expected to identify inefficiencies in the current finance workflow and lead the move toward more automated, reliable reporting using ERPNext.

Your work directly supports the company's cash position and commercial decision-making. By tightening credit control, spotting stock discrepancies early, and delivering clean monthly closes, you help the leadership team run a financially stable operation in a sector where margins and payment timing are often tight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Head the full accounts receivable function: reviewing customer statements, chasing overdue invoices, and engaging with the sales team to resolve payment disputes while keeping days sales outstanding as low as possible.
  • Assess customer creditworthiness, set appropriate payment limits, monitor buyer behaviour, and recommend practical recovery steps for chronically delinquent accounts.
  • Maintain the general ledger with complete accuracy, recording necessary accruals, prepayments, and depreciation entries, and driving a well-organised month-end and year-end close.
  • Carry out thorough reconciliations of bank statements, supplier balances, intercompany accounts, and all significant balance sheet line items on a regular schedule.
  • Take charge of inventory accounting specific to fertilizer stock, investigating discrepancies between book records and physical counts, and facilitating periodic warehouse stock checks.
  • Prepare and file statutory returns for VAT, PAYE, and withholding tax, while ensuring every ETIMS/TIMS-issued invoice is correctly matched to general ledger postings.
  • Coordinate audit activity by preparing complete supporting schedules, responding to queries from internal and external auditors, and correcting any flagged control weaknesses promptly.
  • Improve finance operations within ERPNext by testing updated reporting tools, cleaning up chart-of-account structures, and training other finance staff on better use of system features.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, commerce, or another business-related discipline.
  • Full CPA(K) certification or an equivalent professional accounting qualification recognised in Kenya.
  • At least 4 to 6 years of progressive accounting experience, with a strong preference for candidates from trading, distribution, or manufacturing environments.
  • Hands-on, demonstrable experience using ERPNext for daily accounting and monthly closing is non-negotiable.
  • Advanced Excel capability, including comfortable use of formulas, pivot tables, and large-scale data manipulation for reporting and analysis.
  • Solid technical knowledge of IFRS, Kenyan tax regulations, and ETIMS reporting requirements.
  • A proven record of meeting collection targets, executing clean month-end closures, and submitting tax returns before deadlines.

What We Offer / Why Join

This is a chance to step into a senior finance role within an established supplier to Kenya's agricultural sector, reporting directly to executive leadership rather than being buried in a large corporate team. You will receive a monthly salary of between KSh 120,000 and KSh 150,000, commensurate with your experience and capabilities. The position is based on-site in Nairobi and offers meaningful influence over how the company manages its cash, inventory, and compliance obligations.
