Role Overview
This position pairs hands-on engineering knowledge with frontline selling: you will split your time between sites and the desk, walking installations, reading drawings and bills of quantities, sizing pumps and irrigation networks, and translating what a customer genuinely needs into a specification they can buy with confidence. Working across the water and irrigation sector, you own opportunities from first enquiry to signed order, acting as the technical voice that clients, consultants and contractors rely on. The role matters because revenue in this market is won on credibility — the person who can defend a design, price it accurately and stand behind it after delivery is the one who grows the account.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and progress a pipeline of water and irrigation opportunities, opening new accounts as well as expanding existing ones, and keep it visible through the company's CRM and forecasting routine.
- Carry out customer visits, site assessments and technical consultations to establish flow rates, head requirements, terrain, water source and end use, so recommendations suit the application rather than a catalogue page.
- Size and specify irrigation systems, pumps, water management equipment and related products, and produce the supporting technical documentation.
- Interpret specifications, drawings and bills of quantities, then prepare quotations, proposals and tender submissions with pricing verified alongside engineering, procurement and finance colleagues.
- Present technical and commercial proposals to consultants, contractors, developers, engineers and government or institutional buyers, and negotiate through to closure.
- Track tender notices, project announcements and market activity to spot upcoming work, competitor pricing moves and segments worth targeting.
- Stay with each deal beyond the order — coordinating with logistics, operations and after-sales so delivery, commissioning and follow-up match what was promised.
- Keep management informed through regular forecasts, sales reports and market feedback that feed into pricing and product decisions.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in engineering — civil, mechanical, agricultural, water, irrigation or a comparable discipline.
- Five to ten years in technical sales or business development, with direct, demonstrable experience in the water and irrigation sector.
- A track record of meeting or exceeding revenue targets in B2B settings where the sales cycle runs through specification, quotation and tender.
- Solid grasp of irrigation system design, pump selection and water management equipment, plus the ability to conduct site assessments and technical evaluations.
- Confidence reading engineering drawings, technical specifications and BOQs, and converting them into a priced, defensible proposal.
- Previous dealings with contractors, consultants, engineering firms, developers, or institutional and government clients — a clear advantage.
- Working knowledge of CRM platforms and sales reporting tools, with the discipline to keep pipeline data current.
- Strong negotiation and communication skills, and a willingness to travel to sites and client meetings.
