Job Title: Consultant Pulmonologist & Intensivist

Reporting to: Head of Department

About the Role

Reporting to the Head of Department, the Consultant Pulmonologist & Intensivist will provide specialist pulmonology and critical care services. This role is responsible for delivering safe, evidence-based, high-quality, and patient-centred care. The successful candidate will assess, diagnose, treat, and provide ongoing care for patients with respiratory and critical illnesses across outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, emergency services, the High Dependency Unit (HDU), and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The Consultant will provide clinical leadership, promote patient safety, support multidisciplinary care, mentor junior medical staff, participate in continuous professional development and quality improvement initiatives, and contribute to the growth and development of pulmonology and critical care services in the hospital.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist consultation, diagnosis, and management of patients with acute and chronic respiratory diseases.
  • Perform and interpret specialized pulmonary diagnostic procedures including bronchoscopy, pulmonary function testing, thoracic ultrasound and other respiratory investigations.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds, case discussions and collaborate with other specialists to ensure coordinated patient care.
  • Provide specialist consultations for inpatient referrals, outpatient clinics, and emergency cases.
  • Provide specialist critical care services to critically ill adult patients admitted to the ICU, HDU and other hospital departments.
  • Lead the management of patients requiring invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, advanced airway management, and other organ support therapies.
  • Participate in the consultant on-call roster and provide emergency specialist services as required.
  • Support the development and expansion of Pulmonology and Critical Care services within the cluster.
  • Develop, review, and implement evidence-based clinical guidelines and clinical care pathways.
  • Promote patient safety, infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship and other clinical and quality priorities.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Head of Department or Medical Director.

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB or equivalent).
  • Master of Medicine (MMed) in Internal Medicine or equivalent recognized postgraduate qualification.
  • Fellowship or subspecialty training in Pulmonology/Respiratory Medicine.
  • Additional training or fellowship in Critical Care Medicine from a recognized institution.
  • Registered and licensed to practice by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
  • Valid specialist recognition in Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine.
  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years' post-specialization experience in Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing critically ill patients within a multidisciplinary ICU.
  • Experience in bronchoscopy, pulmonary function testing, mechanical ventilation, and advanced respiratory support.
