Internal Medicine Consultant

Role Overview

This position centres on the diagnosis, treatment and long-term management of adult patients across both outpatient clinics and inpatient wards. The post-holder carries a personal clinical caseload while also acting as a reference point for colleagues who need a second opinion on complex medical cases. Beyond direct patient care, the role shapes how the medical team works — setting standards for documentation, escalation and follow-up so that care remains safe, consistent and evidence-based.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess adults presenting with acute and chronic medical complaints, taking full histories, performing physical examinations and forming working diagnoses.
• Order, review and interpret laboratory, imaging and other diagnostic investigations, adjusting treatment plans as results come in.
• Manage long-term conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiac disease, respiratory illness and renal impairment, including medication review and complication screening.
• Lead daily ward rounds, review admitted patients, and respond to deteriorating patients or medical emergencies as they arise.
• Document clinical decisions, progress notes and discharge plans clearly and promptly so that the wider team can act on them.
• Work alongside nursing, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology and surgical colleagues to coordinate care and arrange referrals where specialist input is needed.
• Supervise, teach and support interns, medical officers and other junior clinicians, including reviewing their assessments and case plans.
• Contribute to clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, infection prevention practices and quality improvement work within the department.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) or an equivalent recognised medical degree.
• A master's degree in Internal Medicine (or equivalent postgraduate qualification in the specialty).
• Current registration with the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
• A valid, active practising licence.
• Clinical experience in adult internal medicine spanning both outpatient consultation and inpatient ward care.
• Confidence in interpreting diagnostic results and making treatment decisions independently, with sound clinical judgement.
• Strong written and verbal communication, including clear record-keeping and effective handover of care.
• Demonstrated ability to lead a clinical team and, equally, to work as a dependable member of a multidisciplinary group.
