Job Description

Role Overview

This internship places you inside the communications unit of a major humanitarian agency operating in Kenya, where you will help shape public narratives around displacement, protection, and aid delivery. Day to day, you will track how the organization appears in local media, craft content for digital platforms, and support the logistical machinery behind press events and public outreach. Your work matters because accurate, compelling storytelling directly influences donor awareness, public empathy, and the visibility of the people the agency serves.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out weekly scans of Kenyan print, broadcast, and online media to log every reference to the organization and flag emerging issues or misinformation.
  • Draft monthly communication products such as fact sheets and briefing kits, working from raw data and field reports under the guidance of the communications supervisor.
  • Refresh and maintain the public website by publishing web stories, press releases, and photo essays that highlight the agency’s operations and the communities it supports.
  • Produce and edit multimedia content—including short videos, photo series, and graphic design assets—that illustrate humanitarian work and the lives of displaced people.
  • Write original copy for the organization’s social media channels, tailoring tone and format for each platform while adhering to brand guidelines.
  • Support the coordination of press briefings, workshops, and conferences by handling invitations, venue logistics, participant communication, and on-site assistance.
  • Keep an organized digital filing system for consent forms, media releases, and other documents tied to the communications unit’s activities.
  • Take on additional administrative and creative tasks as needed to support the broader team’s deadlines and priorities.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program at a university accredited by IAU/UNESCO, or completion of a degree within the last two years.
  • At least two years of completed undergraduate coursework in communications, public relations, journalism, international relations, humanities, or a related field.
  • No more than eight cumulative months of prior full-time UNHCR internship experience, if applicable.
  • Strong written and spoken English—at least B2 level—with the ability to craft clear, engaging narratives for different audiences.
  • Demonstrated interest in humanitarian affairs and an understanding of how communications supports advocacy and field operations.
  • Working proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, for reporting and document preparation.
  • Hands-on experience with Adobe Creative Suite—specifically Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and Illustrator—plus Canva or equivalent design platforms.
  • Familiarity with social media management, photography, or video production is a distinct advantage.
  • Strong organizational habits, keen attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced office environment.
