Clinical Officer

Role Overview

This Clinical Officer position sits within a Level 4 multi-specialty hospital serving Laikipia County, where you will be the first point of contact for patients seeking urgent and routine medical attention. Your day-to-day work involves independently assessing patients, diagnosing common and complex conditions, and carrying out treatment plans while upholding the hospital's standards of quality, efficiency, professionalism, and compassion. You will also play a practical role in emergency response and minor procedures, helping the hospital maintain consistent clinical coverage across its outpatient and inpatient services.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out full patient consultations, including structured history-taking and systematic physical examinations to form accurate clinical impressions.
• Diagnose and manage a broad range of medical conditions, from acute infections to chronic non-communicable diseases, using evidence-based treatment protocols.
• Prescribe and administer medications safely, adjusting dosages and regimens according to patient response, age, and co-morbidities.
• Order and interpret laboratory investigations, imaging, and other diagnostic tests to confirm or rule out differential diagnoses.
• Deliver emergency and first-line care, including triage, stabilization, and referral when a patient's condition exceeds available resources or scope.
• Perform minor medical and surgical procedures such as wound care, suturing, incision and drainage, and other procedures authorised by your clinical license.
• Apply infection prevention and control (IPC) measures consistently, including hand hygiene, sterile technique, and safe disposal of clinical waste.
• Document patient encounters, treatment plans, and outcomes accurately while supporting the implementation of hospital policies and clinical guidelines.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma or Higher Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery from a recognised institution.
• Current registration and licensure with the Clinical Officers Council (COC) of Kenya, with a valid practicing license.
• At least 1–2 years of hands-on clinical experience, with internship experience counting toward this requirement.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is an added advantage and demonstrates readiness for emergency situations.
• Strong clinical reasoning and diagnostic skills, supported by sound decision-making and problem-solving ability.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure, especially during emergencies or high patient volumes.
• Demonstrated ethical conduct, professionalism, and a collaborative mindset when working with other clinicians, nurses, and support staff.
