Job Description

Role Overview

You will join a fast-moving global newsroom in Nairobi as a frontline correspondent responsible for delivering the first accurate alerts and updates on major stories unfolding across Southern and Sub-Saharan Africa. Day to day, you will monitor live wires, social channels, and regional markets, then turn raw developments into crisp, clean copy that gives readers around the world an edge over the competition.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce real-time newsbreaks, headline alerts, and concise updates the moment major political, economic, or humanitarian events break across the region.
  • Develop sidebars and colourful human-interest angles that add context and depth to coverage of breaking news.
  • Monitor currency and equity movements across key Sub-Saharan African markets and connect them to global financial flows and policy shifts.
  • Filter and verify information from multiple sources, including social media, to separate fact from rumour and identify genuinely newsworthy trends.
  • Work closely with text, video, and picture journalists across the region to coordinate fast, multi-format coverage of major stories.
  • Be ready to travel at short notice to cover live events, and file from the field under tight deadlines.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • At least one year spent working in a demanding breaking news environment, with a proven ability to keep a cool head and produce accurate work under pressure.
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to a diverse, multicultural newsroom and collaborating across desks.
  • Strong capacity to absorb complex information quickly and turn it into straightforward, precise language.
  • Excellent news judgement and a solid understanding of political and economic dynamics across multiple Sub-Saharan African countries.
  • Working knowledge of regional stock and currency markets, including how they react to movements in major global financial centres.
  • Fast, economical, and error-free writing style suited to real-time publishing.
  • Professional fluency in English; additional languages such as French, Spanish, or Portuguese are an advantage.
  • Familiarity with digital newsgathering tools, source verification techniques, social listening platforms, and developing AI-driven journalistic workflows.

What We Offer / Why Join

This is an opportunity to work alongside a team of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists and to build a genuinely international career within a major global news organisation. You’ll benefit from continuous on-the-job coaching and dedicated journalism training, as well as a competitive compensation package and benefits that include paid volunteer days. Applications close on September 18th, 2026.
