Role Overview
This position is the hands-on end of a Nairobi wireless ISP's last-mile network: most days you are on a ladder, a pole, or a customer's wall turning a service order into a working broadband link. Reporting to the Network Operations Supervisor, you run and terminate fiber drops, mount and align wireless radios, commission customer premises equipment, and get dispatched when an existing subscriber loses connectivity. The work matters because every splice quality, cable route, and radio alignment you complete decides whether a household stays online — and whether the network needs a second visit.
Key Responsibilities
- Pull, anchor, and dress overhead and underground fiber drop cables between distribution enclosures and subscriber premises, keeping routes weather-safe and tidy.
- Install and commission outdoor wireless radios, access points, indoor Wi-Fi routers, and other customer premises equipment, adjusting mounting height and antenna direction for the strongest possible link.
- Build structured cabling inside customer buildings — Cat6 runs, wall trunking, RJ45 crimping, patch panel termination, and neat cable management.
- Carry out scheduled physical inspections of overhead lines, pole attachments, and distribution cabinets, flagging wear, interference, or damage before it becomes an outage.
- Work dispatch tickets for connectivity faults, systematically isolating the problem across the home gateway, drop cable, and distribution hub rather than guessing.
- Restore service through fiber fusion splicing, OTDR link testing, optical power meter readings, and patch-cord replacement.
- Climb utility and electric poles using certified harnesses and climbing gear, observing height-safety and electrical-hazard protocols on every job.
- Survey each site for electrical and environmental risks before starting work at height, and keep assigned tools, fusion splicers, meters, and installation stock accounted for.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Certificate or diploma in Telecommunications Engineering, Information Technology, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, or a comparable technical field.
- At least two years of direct hands-on experience in last-mile fiber deployment, fusion splicing, and fault troubleshooting inside an ISP or similar network operator.
- Demonstrated ability to climb electric and utility poles, with the fitness and agility to work comfortably at height and outdoors in varied weather.
- Practical field skills: fusion splicing, optical power meter interpretation, OTDR testing, Cat6 and RJ45 termination, and structured cabling layout.
- Working grasp of LAN fundamentals, basic IP addressing, gateway configuration, and Wi-Fi radio alignment.
- Strong diagnostic instincts, real attention to safety, physical stamina, and the customer-facing manner to work respectfully inside people's homes and businesses.
What We Offer / Why Join
- Full-time field-based employment at a monthly salary of KSh 30,000.
- A station on Ngong Road, Nairobi, with a defined reporting line to the Network Operations Supervisor.
- Daily variety across installation, scheduled maintenance, and emergency restoration rather than a single fixed task.
- Direct ownership of the last mile, where your technical decisions are immediately visible in service quality.
