It was founded in France in response to the Biafran War. The organization is known in most of the world by its localized name or simply as MSF; in Canada and the United States the name Doctors Without Borders is commonly used. In 2015 over 30,000, mostly local, doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, logistical experts, water and sanitation engineers and administrators provided medical aid in over 70 countries. These doctors and nurses decided to volunteer their time to solve issues of world health. Private donors provide about 90% of the organization's funding, while corporate donations provide the rest, giving MSF an annual budget of approximately US$750 million. View more View less

Job Description

Role Overview

This role is part of a fast-moving emergency staffing pool created to reinforce outbreak containment operations, primarily in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other countries facing high-consequence viral haemorrhagic fevers. Day to day, you will deploy to resource-limited field settings to support clinical, logistical, or coordination tasks directly linked to interrupting transmission chains and managing patient care. The work matters because your rapid presence can shift the trajectory of an outbreak, protecting communities and frontline health workers when every hour counts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Integrate into an MSF emergency team within 72 hours of activation and assume a defined role in the outbreak response structure.
  • Conduct or support initial assessments of affected zones, including epidemiological surveillance, contact tracing, or infection prevention and control audits.
  • Set up or reinforce isolation units, treatment centres, or community-based monitoring systems in remote or infrastructure-poor locations.
  • Deliver hands-on training for local health staff on safe patient management, barrier nursing, and disinfection protocols for VHF.
  • Participate in daily case reporting, data collection, and coordination meetings with Ministry of Health and partner agencies.
  • Adapt operational plans on the ground as the outbreak evolves, often working with limited supplies and under security constraints.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Confirmed professional experience in an Ebola outbreak response (for Ebola-focused roles) OR extensive field experience in other viral haemorrhagic fever or acute epidemic responses (for non-Ebola emergency roles).
  • Full professional fluency in both French and English – mandatory for all roles.
  • Hold a valid Schengen visa, valid Schengen area residence permit, or a passport exempt from Schengen visa requirements (to allow travel to Europe for the mandatory 21-day post-deployment monitoring period).
  • Available to deploy within three months for a first rotation lasting 6–8 consecutive weeks.
  • Ability to work effectively under high pressure in a fast-changing outbreak environment, with limited resources and minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated resilience in humanitarian settings and willingness to live in basic accommodation with strict hygiene protocols.
  • Commitment to MSF’s humanitarian principles and a collaborative team approach.

What We Offer / Why Join

We do not have employer-specific compensation or benefit details to share from the source. The opportunity lies in being part of a critical, surge-capacity team designed to stop epidemic spread at its source, working alongside seasoned outbreak responders in one of the world’s most challenging humanitarian theatres.
