Swimming Pool Attendant

Role Overview

As a Pool Attendant, you are the person members and guests rely on to find a spotless, well-ordered, and safe swimming environment every time they visit. Your day revolves around inspecting and cleaning the pool and its surroundings, keeping water quality and hygiene in check, setting up equipment, and being a calm, friendly presence on the deck. By staying alert to hazards and handling the small details that keep the facility running smoothly, you directly protect the Club's reputation for high standards and enjoyable leisure experiences.

Key Responsibilities

• Open or close the pool area according to the shift schedule, checking that the deck, changing spaces, showers, and seating are clean, uncluttered, and ready for use.
• Sweep, scrub, and disinfect pool decks, tiles, ladders, handrails, and poolside furniture, removing leaves, litter, and any slipping or tripping hazards as they appear.
• Carry out routine visual checks on water clarity and surface condition, and promptly report any discoloration, debris, unusual odours, or suspected water quality problems to the supervisor.
• Set out, store, and care for pool cleaning tools, safety equipment, and recreational items such as floats, noodles, and lane dividers, making sure everything is used correctly and kept in good condition.
• Observe pool users throughout your shift, politely reinforcing posted rules and safety guidelines, and intervening or escalating when behaviour becomes unsafe.
• Respond to accidents, injuries, or emergencies by following established procedures, giving basic first aid where trained, summoning the lifeguard or supervisor, and completing the required incident paperwork.
• Assist members and guests courteously — answering questions, helping with equipment, directing them to facilities, and passing on requests or complaints to the right person.
• Monitor stock levels of cleaning supplies and hygiene items, use personal protective equipment correctly, and hand over any maintenance faults or unresolved issues at the end of your shift.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A minimum of KCSE or an equivalent secondary school qualification.
• One to two years of hands-on experience in swimming pool operations, recreation, sports facilities, hospitality, leisure, or a comparable environment.
• Basic training in pool operations, lifesaving, first aid, or swimming pool maintenance would be a strong advantage, though it is not mandatory.
• Working knowledge of day-to-day pool operations, cleanliness routines, and what "facility ready" looks like from a member's point of view.
• Familiarity with poolside hygiene and sanitation practices, including safe handling of cleaning chemicals and correct use of personal protective equipment.
• Awareness of water quality requirements and the importance of flagging abnormalities quickly rather than trying to fix them alone.
• Understanding of swimming pool safety rules and emergency procedures, with the confidence to act calmly and follow instructions under pressure.
• Ability to use and care for pool cleaning tools and recreational equipment safely and responsibly.
• Strong customer service instincts — a courteous, approachable manner when dealing with members, guests, and colleagues.
• Basic knowledge of occupational health and safety requirements relevant to a poolside environment.
• Physical stamina to stand, walk, bend, and carry out cleaning and setup tasks for the duration of a shift.
