Role Overview
This position sits within a commercial or corporate banking credit team, where you will be responsible for turning raw financial data into clear, decision-ready analysis. You will handle increasingly complex statements, from not-for-profit entities to business and personal tax returns, and your work will directly influence whether credit applications move forward to underwriting. As a mid-level analyst, you are expected to work independently on most tasks while also mentoring junior team members and coordinating closely with relationship managers and credit officers.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and spread financial statements for new loans, renewals, and interim reviews, with a focus on complex filings such as not-for-profit organizations and multi-entity structures.
- Build concise, well-supported credit narratives that compare the borrower against industry peers, portfolio benchmarks, and broader market trends.
- Perform preliminary credit assessments for straightforward and complicated deals, calculating debt service coverage, cash flow, collateral coverage, and guarantor net worth.
- Act as a bridge between relationship managers, credit officers, and other credit center staff to ensure all documentation and financial information is complete before underwriting begins.
- Advise lending teams on loan agreement language, covenant interpretation, and ongoing compliance monitoring.
- Conduct quality assurance checks on application packages and credit memos to catch inconsistencies or missing information early in the process.
- Coach and train entry-level credit analysts, and provide backup coverage for the application preparation team manager when needed.
- Serve as a subject matter resource for specialized lending programs, including SBA and EXIM loan analysis, when assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Two to five years of experience in a financial institution, specifically performing credit analysis and using spreading software to organize financial statements.
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP accounting principles, financial regulations, and a range of lending products and credit structures.
- Ability to interpret data and make sound judgments even when information is incomplete or the situation is nuanced.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, especially when explaining complex or sensitive credit issues to colleagues and stakeholders.
- Proven attention to detail and a systematic approach to breaking down financial information.
- A bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
