Tech Lead, Payments & Financial Infrastructure

Role Overview

Triply is hiring a Tech Lead for Payments & Financial Infrastructure — a player-coach position split roughly 80% hands-on engineering and 20% people leadership. Day to day you will design and ship the services that authorise payments, hold customer balances, move money out to banks and cards, and reconcile what actually settled against what the ledger says should have settled, while coaching a small team of engineers through the same work. This is the layer the business depends on to move other people's money without losing it, breaking its audit trail, or creating exposure it cannot explain to a regulator.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and own payment orchestration: collections, payment links, and routing logic that selects the right bank, PSP, or acquiring path for each transaction.
• Develop wallet and balance systems on top of a double-entry ledger, with immutability, traceable entries, and auditability as first-class design constraints rather than afterthoughts.
• Implement payouts, transfers, and FX flows, including money movement across currencies and the error handling that keeps partial failures from becoming lost funds.
• Integrate card products and card-processing partners, covering authorisation, capture, refunds, chargebacks, and the data model that ties card activity back to the ledger.
• Own settlement and reconciliation pipelines end to end, resolving breaks between provider reports, bank statements, and internal records.
• Wire up new bank, PSP, and financial-provider integrations, including the API contracts, retry semantics, and failure modes each one brings.
• Implement KYC/KYB checks, fraud controls, dispute handling, and financial risk guardrails in the transaction path.
• Take responsibility for production reliability: monitoring, alerting, on-call escalation, incident command, and the follow-up work that stops the same failure happening twice.
• Lead a small engineering team through architecture reviews, code review, technical mentoring, and the day-to-day standards that keep financial code reviewable; build and maintain internal tooling for finance and operations staff.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Seven or more years building production software, including at least two in a technical lead, staff, or senior ownership role on a system others depend on.
• Substantial hands-on experience in payments or financial infrastructure: ledgers, balance management, payment orchestration, settlement, reconciliation, or money movement.
• Strong backend engineering skills in at least one language used for high-throughput services (for example Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, or Node.js), plus solid relational database and data-modelling ability, including migrations against live financial data.
• Practical grasp of distributed-systems fundamentals as they apply to money: idempotency, retries and backoff, at-least-once versus exactly-once delivery, transactional consistency, and queue-based processing.
• Comfortable working with third-party financial APIs — REST, webhooks, and asynchronous callbacks — and reading provider documentation critically. Familiarity with messaging standards such as ISO 20022 or ISO 8583 is a plus.
• Working knowledge of the security and compliance context around payments, such as PCI DSS scope, KYC/AML obligations, and strong customer authentication requirements, and the judgement to know when to bring in compliance specialists.
• Track record of test discipline in a domain where bugs cost real money: automated unit and integration tests, contract tests against providers, and reconciliation or replay test harnesses.
• Demonstrated ability to lead: reviewing others' code, mentoring engineers, and collaborating closely with finance, risk, compliance, and product stakeholders who do not share your technical vocabulary.
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
