Job Description

Role Overview

The Associate Systems Administrator is a hands-on infrastructure role within the bank's IT operations team, focused on keeping servers, networks, storage systems, and virtualised environments running smoothly. Day to day, this role involves proactive system monitoring, first-line incident response, applying patches and backups, and supporting end users when hardware or software issues arise. The position is essential to maintaining the bank's system availability and security, with work carried out under the guidance of senior engineers while still owning routine operational tasks from start to finish.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out scheduled checks on servers, virtual machines, network devices, and storage platforms, reviewing event logs and performance metrics to detect potential outages before they impact users.
  • Act as the first point of contact for infrastructure-related incidents, triaging support tickets, diagnosing hardware, operating system, and connectivity faults, and implementing fixes that get to the root cause rather than providing temporary workarounds.
  • Support the lifecycle of Windows Server and Linux systems by applying operating system patches, performing controlled upgrades, and configuring new services in line with change management procedures.
  • Run and verify backup jobs, test restoration processes, and take part in disaster recovery and failover exercises to ensure that data protection measures are always production-ready.
  • Administer user access and permissions across infrastructure systems, applying least-privilege principles and ensuring all changes are recorded and approved according to bank security policy.
  • Monitor storage capacity, compute utilisation, and system performance, producing regular reports and escalating capacity concerns to senior team members before they become service risks.
  • Support the infrastructure preparation for new projects and application deployments, working with cross-functional teams to define server, network, and storage requirements.
  • Maintain operational documentation, update runbooks, and participate in after-hours, weekend, or on-call rotations when critical maintenance or incident response is required.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education and experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, information systems, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of one to two years of relevant experience in IT infrastructure support, including exposure to server administration, enterprise networking, and production environments.

Certifications

  • A relevant entry-level certification such as Microsoft AZ-900, Microsoft MD-102, CompTIA Linux+, CompTIA Network+, CCNA, AWS Cloud Practitioner, or AWS Solutions Architect Associate.
  • CompTIA A+ or CompTIA Server+ is an added advantage.

Technical skills

  • Working knowledge of Windows Server and Linux/Unix administration, including basic configuration, troubleshooting, and command-line operations.
  • Familiarity with server virtualisation platforms such as VMware or Hyper-V, as well as container technologies.
  • Working knowledge of cloud platforms including AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, particularly foundational compute, storage, and networking services.
  • Experience administering Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange Online and Teams, in a business environment.
  • Practical familiarity with enterprise storage systems and backup tools, with the ability to perform and verify backup jobs.
  • Basic understanding of data protection principles, replication, and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Working knowledge of database systems such as SQL Server, MySQL, or Oracle, sufficient to carry out infrastructure monitoring and support duties.
  • Awareness of information security best practices, access control principles, and organisational security policies.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure and performance monitoring tools used to track system health and availability.
