Role Overview
This role owns the compute and storage foundation that everything else in the environment depends on — from the racks in the data center up through the hypervisor and operating system layers. Day to day, the engineer provisions and tunes capacity, applies firmware and OS patches on schedule, and acts as the escalation point for the server, storage, and OS problems that frontline teams cannot resolve. The position operates inside a formal change-management process, with standing authority to follow pre-approved procedures and to make emergency changes when critical services are degraded, so long as notifications and post-incident documentation follow promptly.
Key Responsibilities
- Build out new capacity end to end: rack, cable, and commission servers and storage arrays, keep deployment records accurate, and retire end-of-life equipment in a controlled, auditable way.
- Operate the SAN and storage estate, handling LUN allocation, snapshots, replication, switch zoning and maintenance, firmware currency, and the capacity and performance analysis that keeps ahead of growth.
- Administer VMware vSphere and Oracle VM — deploying and right-sizing virtual machines, maintaining templates, managing HA/DRS clusters, migrating physical workloads onto virtual infrastructure, and keeping hypervisors patched and on supported versions.
- Install, tune, troubleshoot, and harden RHEL, Oracle Linux, and Oracle Solaris systems to CIS benchmarks, DISA STIGs, and internal security baselines.
- Plan and execute operating system, hypervisor, and firmware patching under approved change records, then produce the validation results and compliance evidence that accompany each change.
- Monitor infrastructure health, alerting, and capacity; perform preventive maintenance, environmental and firmware reviews, and periodic restoration tests covering VoIP and UPS systems, plus backup validation in Commvault and Veeam.
- Serve as a Tier 2/3 escalation resource for server, storage, and operating-system incidents, coordinating with onsite technicians, the Service Desk, and Network teams, and participating in a 24×7 on-call rotation.
- Maintain runbooks, system diagrams, physical rack layouts, and ITSM records, publish a weekly system-health report, and recommend improvements to capacity, infrastructure, and process. Non-emergency changes route through CAB approval.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a related technical field, or equivalent hands-on experience in lieu of a degree.
- At least 5 years of enterprise infrastructure work in a production environment.
- Strong working command of RHEL 7/8/9, Oracle Linux, and Oracle Solaris 11.4, including installation, configuration, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
- Hands-on VMware vSphere administration, covering VM lifecycle, resource allocation, templates, HA/DRS clustering, P2V conversion, patching, and version upgrades.
- Practical enterprise storage and SAN skills: LUN provisioning, snapshots, replication, performance tuning, capacity planning, zoning, and switch maintenance.
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose and replace data-center hardware in production, with a solid grasp of TCP/IP networking and infrastructure security practices.
- Automation ability in at least one of Bash, Python, or PowerShell.
- Preferred: RHCE, VCP-DCV, CompTIA Server+, or comparable vendor certification; exposure to Solaris 10/11, Oracle VM, Ansible, or Terraform; and prior work in a regulated financial-services setting.
