Job Title: Fibre Network Maintenance Technician

Reporting Structure

Primary Reporting: Team Leader – Field Operations

Secondary Reporting: Regional Technical Manager

Job Summary

Successfully undertake all activities relating to routine maintenance, corrective maintenance, root cause analysis, and network quality initiatives for the fibre optic network. This role is essential to ensuring the reliability and high performance of our fibre infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, test, and repair old or malfunctioning fibre network infrastructure, including scheduled preventive maintenance on optical cables, closure kits, ducts, and manholes.
  • Generate sensor indicators and execute inspections to ensure fibre optic systems are free from faults that could destabilize performance.
  • Conduct regular inspections of assigned systems and repair any defects identified.
  • Prepare and maintain system records and system diagrams.
  • Perform fibre optic maintenance, including point of break/link analysis, splicing, core alignment, and splice quality validation using necessary tools and techniques.

Principal Outputs

  • Achievement of performance KPIs.
  • Ensure fibre segment availability of 98%.
  • Achieve 80% of trouble tickets within service level agreements.
  • Ensure quality fibre splices with a slope of less than 0.25 dB/km within the segment.

Qualifications – Academic and Professional

  • BSc in Electronic, Electrical, or Telecommunication Engineering, or a related field.
  • Training in optical fibre technology.
  • Higher Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
  • Certification in fibre technology.

Experience

  • Two years of experience in fibre maintenance.
  • Proven track record in analysing trends, undertaking root cause analysis, identifying key issues, and implementing actions to improve network and service availability and quality.

  • Microsoft Office proficiency.

  • Troubleshooting skills.
  • Must be able to work at height (certified), in confined spaces, and in all weather conditions.

  • Optical fibre network damages due to road construction or vandalism.
  • Maintenance materials and spare parts shortages.
  • Preventive maintenance scheduling and execution.
  • Acquisition and utilisation of recovered network assets.

Operating Environment

This is an office and field-based role. The job operates in remote locations with multiple interfaces across units. Planning is required daily, weekly, and monthly based on job demand and network needs.
