Job Description

Role Overview

Fertility Point Kenya is seeking a Biomedical Engineer to take ownership of the equipment that keeps an IVF and fertility centre running safely and consistently. This is a hands-on position: you will be the person the embryology and theatre teams call when an incubator drifts, a micromanipulator loses stability, or a gas reading falls outside range, and you will also be the one preventing those calls through disciplined planned maintenance. Because embryo development depends on tightly controlled temperature, gas, humidity and air quality, your work sits directly behind every clinical outcome the centre delivers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and carry out preventive maintenance on IVF laboratory equipment, including tri-gas and CO2 incubators, laminar flow hoods and workstations, micromanipulation and microinjection systems, heated stages, centrifuges, microscopes, and cryostorage vessels.
  • Maintain, service and troubleshoot operating theatre equipment such as surgical lights, operating tables, electrosurgical units, suction units, anaesthesia delivery systems, infusion devices, and patient monitoring equipment.
  • Perform scheduled calibration of temperature, CO2 and gas-mixing systems, pH and gas analysers, timers, sensors and alarms, and keep traceable calibration records for every instrument.
  • Monitor and document incubator and laboratory environmental parameters, escalating drift or instability before it can affect gamete and embryo culture.
  • Diagnose faults at component level, source and fit spare parts, and coordinate with external service providers or manufacturers when repairs fall outside in-house capability.
  • Manage cryogenic storage equipment, including liquid nitrogen dewar maintenance, level monitoring, alarm testing, and support for inventory integrity across storage tanks.
  • Maintain an accurate asset register and equipment history, covering service logs, calibration certificates, breakdown reports, and warranty or service-contract records.
  • Support quality and compliance activity by preparing equipment documentation for audits and accreditation inspections, and by training laboratory and theatre staff on correct equipment use and first-line troubleshooting.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • At least five years of hands-on biomedical engineering experience, with a strong portion of that spent inside an IVF unit, fertility centre, or comparable clinical embryology laboratory.
  • Demonstrated practical competence with IVF laboratory equipment — incubators, laminar flow and workstations, micromanipulation systems, microscopes and cryostorage — not just general hospital equipment exposure.
  • Working knowledge of operating theatre equipment maintenance and safety requirements.
  • Proven calibration and metrology skills, including the ability to work to defined tolerances and produce defensible calibration and maintenance records.
  • Strong electrical, electronic, mechanical and pneumatic fault-finding ability, with the confidence to repair rather than only replace.
  • Familiarity with quality management systems and audit expectations in a clinical laboratory environment, and comfort working to documented SOPs.
  • Excellent documentation discipline, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical issues clearly to embryologists, clinicians and theatre teams.
  • Willingness to respond to urgent equipment failures outside standard working hours when clinical cycles depend on it; professional registration with a relevant engineering body is an added advantage.
